Job Overview
EC Teacher Assistant in Learning Connections Classroom. Assist classroom teachers with individual students or small groups, and perform related duties as assigned. Work is performed under moderate supervision of the principal.
Qualifications
Four‑year degree from an accredited college/university
Two‑year degree from an accredited college or university
48 semester credits from an accredited college or university
Passing WorkKeys assessment scores and completion of an orientation by the Exceptional Children’s department
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of special education needs of pupils
General knowledge of practices and methods used in special education programs
Ability to assist classroom teacher in a variety of tasks
Skill in working with special education students
Ability to work with and assist special education pupils
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, public, associates and students
Ability to accept and follow direction of teacher as well as being a self‑starter
Ability to display calmness, patience, and firmness in managing problem behaviors
Patient and kind, showing respect for all students regardless of abilities or needs
Willingness and ability to learn new skills
Dependable and prompt
Salary and Reporting
Pay Grade: NC 05
Salary: $17.06 to $26.66 per hour
Reports to: Principal
Essential Functions
Teach and implement IEP goals and NCSCOS lessons and extensions
Perform non‑academic activities such as lunch, encore, recess, etc.
Outside classroom duties including car, bus, and hallway duties
Provide self‑help and medical support as needed
Assist with management of instruction and behavior
Assist with provision of individualized instruction and instructional monitoring
Assist teacher with preparation for instruction
Help assure that students are properly supervised at all times
Manage behavior through approved methods, as established by teacher and IEP team
Help students with personal care and hygiene needs
Maintain medication logs according to regulations and administer insulin shots if needed
Perform related work as required
Physical Requirements
Occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force
Requires speaking or hearing and lifting; frequently requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, and repetitive motions; occasionally requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and pushing or pulling
Standard vision requirements
Vocal communication required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly
Hearing required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound
Requires analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities
No exposure to environmental conditions
Moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)
