TEACHER – SPECIAL EDUCATION

WAGE:

Compensation is determined by a structured salary schedule. The starting salary is based on the candidate’s degree level and verified years of licensed or certificated experience.

Job Summary
The special education teacher is responsible for planning instruction and adapting the curriculum to accommodate scholars in the learning process. The teacher functions as the case manager for scholars with individualized education programs (IEPs) and oversees their compliance.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in education with endorsement in at least one area of special education (ASD, EI, CI, SLD, PI, HI, VI, TBI, etc.).

Current appropriate Michigan special education teaching certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Understanding of current research on how children learn and ability to motivate scholars to perform at their best.

Competency in administering and interpreting academic testing and developing behavior support plans.

Ability to work in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing.

Ability to differentiate instruction and create challenging, engaging opportunities for all scholars.

Team‑member participation.

Ability to manage a demanding workload.

Consistent dependable attendance and punctuality.

Essential Job Functions

Develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) based on evaluation data and research‑based practices.

Support scholar learning in the least restrictive environment.

Differentiate instruction to ensure progress per the district’s Academic Plan.

Document scholar progress, accommodations, service time, and discipline information.

Monitor and document provision of services for scholars with 10 or more days of suspension.

Collaborate with service providers, general‑education teachers, and staff to support evaluation data review.

Provide support to general‑education classroom teachers.

Develop, implement, and evaluate behavior support plans.

Participate in special‑education, building, and district meetings as directed by the supervisor.

Log and maintain monthly Service Capture reporting for Medicaid billing.

Maintain an electronic log of IEP services.

Support Response to Intervention (RtI) and Scholar Success Team processes.

Participate in positive behavior support (PBIS) initiatives.

Integrate technology use in the classroom.

Parent and Community Engagement

Maintain regular, positive contact with parents via phone, email, or home visits.

Establish and maintain effective written and oral communication with scholars, parents, and colleagues.

Participate in parent meetings, including IEPs and Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Contribute to positive relationships between school and the wider community through cooperative events and publications.

Other Duties

Display physical, social, mental, and emotional soundness.

Serve as a role model for scholars and within the school community.

Interact positively with co‑workers, administration, scholars, parents, and the community.

Encourage team spirit and contribute to decision‑making processes.

Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.

Support extracurricular activities and school programs, including recess duty as requested.

Promote school district goals and objectives.

Comply with state, federal, district policies, procedures, rules, and union contract.

Consistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
The employee must stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, and hear in quiet or noisy environments. Occasionally lift up to 40 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust/focus.

Work Environment
The noise level is usually moderate. Most work is performed indoors, with some required outdoor activities. The employee is responsible for the safety and well‑being of scholars.

Mental Functions
Requires comparison, analysis, oral and written communication, copying, coordinating, instructing, computing, synthesizing, evaluating, using interpersonal skills, compiling, and negotiating.
