Pharmacy Technician

Scope of Position
Pharmacy technicians, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist in the various activities of the pharmacy department not requiring the professional judgment of the pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians will function in strict accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines.

They perform a variety of duties including procurement, storage, dispensing of medications and supplies, manufacturing preparations, and patient medication history. They work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, reporting to the Clinical Pharmacy and Operations Manager and Director of Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

Maintain confidentiality of all materials handled within the entity and ensure proper release of information.

Comply with network and departmental policies regarding employee, patient and environmental safety and follow required reporting.

Demonstrate financial responsibility and accountability through effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures.

Meet attendance and dress code policies.

Acquire and maintain knowledge of the Greater Waterbury Health Network and Pharmacy Department.

Accurately fill medications, medication carts/trays, stock requisitions, IV orders from computer‑generated labels, and update records.

Deliver medications to and pick up from patient care areas, automated dispensing cabinets, or via pneumatic tube when appropriate.

Prepare pharmaceutical sterile products and chemotherapeutic admixtures as assigned.

Keep work area clean, maintain par levels, remove outdated drugs.

Accurately credit returned patient medications.

Answer telephone/window inquiries and deal with visitors appropriately; involve other pharmacy staff and direct drug information questions to a pharmacist.

Prepare prepackaged medications under pharmacist supervision using proper technique; maintain logs and complete work within shift.

Maintain working knowledge of chemical and physical properties of drugs handled; identify light‑sensitive, refrigeration‑required, caustic, or poisonous medications; use reference materials for stability info or safety data sheets.

Dispose of pharmaceutical waste appropriately.

Perform drug purchasing and inventory control functions.

Conduct floor inspections for all medication areas.

Perform patient medication history, include patient and/or family; document accurately; resolve discrepancies with outside pharmacy or physician; record in the medical record.

Complete pharmacy department quality improvement/quality control assignments.

Conduct routine controlled drug inventory audits.

Use effective interpersonal communication skills while maintaining confidentiality and addressing co‑workers, nurses, and others pleasantly.

Carry out routine activities with minimal supervision, offer help when needed, participate in training new employees.

Maintain safe working habits, avoid hazardous conditions.

Complete and maintain IV/admixtures laboratory and departmental competencies.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

BS or Associates Degree preferred in Biology or Chemistry.

High School Diploma with completion of formalized pharmacy technician training program or equivalent experience.

National Pharmacy Technician Certification required.

Must have or be eligible for pharmacy technician registration in the State of Connecticut.

Hospital pharmacy experience preferred.

Ability to work well as a member of an interdisciplinary team with tact and confidentiality.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.

Basic computer skills and ability to access internet and programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.

Perform automated functions within job responsibility.

Ability to prepare and complete records as required.

General knowledge of chemistry and mathematics.

Ability to learn new techniques and use equipment.

Standing, walking and lifting required.
