Intermittent (0-19 hours/week) summer assignment (June-August) during a two‑week, nine-day onboard sortie aboard CGA Leadership44 sloops.

Summary
This is an intermittent temporary position in the USCG Academy’s Coastal Sail Training Program (CSTP) that reinforces leadership objectives for 2/c cadets. The instructor will teach, coach, and mentor cadets in leadership, seamanship, and navigation skills during a long‑range course in southern New England waters. The program emphasizes teamwork and technical credibility.

Duties

Develop technical credibility in basic sailing, seamanship, meteorology, situational awareness in the maritime environment, and small‑boat operations, fostering a liking for the sea and its lore, including knowledge of safety‑at‑sea procedures.

Develop basic proficiency in navigation, particularly coastal piloting using paper charts (without the aid of a gyrocompass or electronic navigation) in areas that present navigational challenges; train cadets’ “seaman’s eye” in correlating charts to the visual presentation of the waterway.

Expand working knowledge of Coast Guard Cutter‑like afloat operations (watch standing, logistics, preventative maintenance, teamwork, administration, operating parameters, risk assessment, etc.).

Invest in individual and team growth in leadership and character development through experiential learning.

Represent the Academy well to the boating public.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications – Minimum

Professional instructor‑level sailing, seamanship, and navigational knowledge (using paper charts).

Professional mariner’s knowledge of the COLREG’s Rules of the Road for near‑coastal operation of a ~44‑foot sailing vessel (vessel less than 12 m).

Familiarity with the proper use of marine electronics, including AIS, radar, and VHF.

3-5 years of professional sail training experience.

Current First Aid and CPR certifications.

Qualifications – Preferred

Familiarity with the Coast Guard’s core leadership competencies for Leading Self, Leading Others, and Leading Performance and Change.

Familiarity and use of the Coast Guard Academy’s Leadership Development Program, including leadership and team‑building models used in this program (e.g., LEAD strategy, Tuckman’s stages of team development).

Assessing cadets on their ability to demonstrate behaviors associated with the Coast Guard core leadership competencies.

Familiarity with operating a ~44‑foot sailboat with 9‑foot draft in and around the ports and waterways of southern New England (Long Island Sound, Fisher’s Island Sound, Block Island Sound, Narragansett Bay, RI).

Prior qualification as an Officer in Charge (OIC) in CSTP, or all of the following:

US Sailing Cruising Instructor or Bareboat Cruising Instructor certifications, or equivalent.

Current USCG 25‑ton Near‑Coastal Mariner’s license, or greater.

CT (or other state’s) Safe Boating certification.

Residency Requirements: Non‑U.S. nationals who are authorized to work in the U.S. and applying for any DHS position must have resided within the United States or U.S. territories for at least three of the last five years.
