
Lead Wildlife and Plant Member - Pacific Northwest and Pacific Southwest Researc

American Conservation Experience (ACE) is seeking TWO Lead Wildlife and Plant Members to contribute to ecological research projects related to timber production, forest fire fuel reduction, habitat restoration, and wildlife monitoring. Members will work with PNW and PSW research staff and coordinate with research teams across each station, collecting and managing ecological data, and working in a safe, collaborative team environment.
Location
Pacific Northwest Research Station, La Pine, Oregon (Duty stations: Wind River Experimental Forest, Pringle Falls Experimental Forest, H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, Cascade Head Experimental Forest)
Responsibilities
Deploy and retrieve autonomous recording units for wildlife.
Maintain and download data from weather stations and data loggers.
Conduct surveys for fish, amphibians, and birds.
Perform woodpecker nest searching and telemetry.
Live trap small mammals, handle, measure, and ear‑tag individuals.
Measure and identify vegetation.
Characterize fuel types (coarse/fine debris, soil, standing fuels).
Record high‑quality data independently.
Navigate and orient using GPS, map, compass over rugged terrain in all weather.
Occasional field camping.
Lead 1–4 crew members, ensuring data quality and protocol adherence.
Communicate frequently with PNW and PSW ecologists about scheduling, travel, equipment, and safety.
Schedule
Shift schedules vary; early mornings or nights may be required. Working hours include four 10‑hour days or five 8‑hour days, with up to 80 hours every two weeks. Workers may be required on Labor Day and Indigenous Peoples Day for small‑mammal trapping.
Benefits
Living allowance: $700 /week, offsetting food and incidental expenses, paid bi‑weekly.
Housing at no cost; primitive camping may be required.
Relocation allowance up to $350.
Gear allowance up to $200 for approved gear purchases.
Position‑specific training, including wilderness first aid/CPR.
Eligible for federal hiring authority upon completion of term and 640 hours of service, subject to eligibility requirements.
Qualifications
Required
U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Professional, positive representation of ACE.
Self‑directed, capable of working alone and in a team.
Valid driver’s license with insurable record.
Pass criminal history checks.
Perform essential duties with or without accommodation.
Complete required administrative tasks (timesheets, evaluations).
Travel frequently and move between bunkhouses; use of government vehicle.
Willing to work a 24‑week minimum commitment.
Preferred
Bachelor’s degree or pursuit in natural resource field with wildlife or vegetation experience.
Experience working outdoors and making independent decisions.
Lead group of individuals successfully.
Physical fitness, mobility, tolerance for extreme weather.
Experience driving 4x4 or AWD off‑road.
Hiking long distances off‑trail in adverse weather.
Data entry, summarization, and compilation skills.
Navigation using GPS, mobile devices, and paper maps.
Knowledge of biological science theories and practices.
Knowledge of biological sample techniques.
Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft products proficiency.
Experience with established field protocols.
Physical Demands
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, handling small animals and plants, using tools and computer equipment, stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, crouching. Carry up to 40 lb. Hike rough terrain and camp overnight. Able to lift up to 50 lb.
Environmental Conditions/Hazards
Work mostly outdoors; weather can change rapidly including snow, heavy rain, extreme heat, wildfire smoke. Exposure to poisonous or thorny plants, insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. PPE required as per USFS protocols.

USFS vehicle and PPE provided; strict adherence to USFS and ACE training and safety protocols required.
