JOB DESCRIPTION

School Nurse

GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general supervision, is responsible for promoting and maintaining the health and well‑being of all students by providing services such as assessments, first aid, counseling, and emergency care. Reports to: School level – Principal; District level – Director of Special Services; Nursing – Nurse.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Monitors, evaluates, and treats physical/medical conditions of students; confers with physicians as needed for proper treatment of injuries/illnesses; refers severe health problems to parents for further diagnosis and remedy; directs continuing health problems to outside community sources.
Administers prescription and non‑prescription medications as directed by physician and parent, in compliance with district policy and S.C. DHEC recommendations, and follows the protocol of emergency medication.
Obtains and maintains student immunization records; prepares S.C. certificates of immunization under the memorandum of agreement with S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control; prepares DHEC immunization reports as required.
Communicates with parents about the health of their child(ren); provides instruction for proper medical care. Monitors homebound students and follows up appropriately. Makes home visits as necessary.
Assists in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect. Assists in crisis situations such as bullying/harassment, suicidal ideation, student death, and other crisis issues.
Controls communicable diseases, reports to appropriate agencies, uses the S.C.DHEC exclusion list, and maintains a log of students excluded for communicable diseases.
Conducts periodic vision, dental, hearing, blood pressure, and other screenings. Makes referrals to appropriate medical resources or agencies and follows up with parents to remove barriers to referral completion.
Uses the nursing process in assessment, intervention, planning, and evaluation of student health. Develops individualized health care plans and emergency action plans for students with chronic health conditions and revises them as needed.
Assists administrators and teachers in planning and instruction of health curriculum. Instructs students on proper health practices including nutrition, exercise, growth, reproductive, and general health.
Provides training for health room assistants and first‑aid providers. Conducts staff training to promote awareness of illness and disease symptoms.
Complies with Federal OSHA regulations and the district’s Exposure Control Plan. Conducts Bloodborne Pathogen training programs for new employees and serves as a resource for related questions.
Attends various school‑based and district‑based meetings such as RTI teams, IEP meetings, 504‑Plan meetings, or other requested meetings.
Treats medical/health conditions of staff on an emergency basis.
Uses various tools and equipment such as AED, audiometer, stethoscope, otoscope, thermometer, scoliometer, audio/visual equipment, first‑aid supplies, CPR shield, protective clothing, etc.
Prepares records and reports: daily log of health room visits, medication administration records, accident reports, immunization records, medical alert forms, Medicaid and OSHA reports, medication consent forms, safety data sheets, annual statistics, parent notifications, observation records, screening and referral forms.
Maintains confidentiality of personal data on students and staff and confidential records of HBV vaccinations, training programs, exposure incidents, and follow‑up opinions of district health care professionals.
Serves on the Superintendent’s Health Advisory Council, the school Health Council, and school Wellness Committees as needed.
Orders health room supplies as needed. Willingly performs other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in South Carolina. Two years recent nursing experience, preferably in school nursing, public health, or community health with children. CPR certification.
Knowledge
Extensive knowledge of physical and emotional health promotion; proper healthcare practices, detection of illness, injury, and disease, screening methods and procedures, referral methods, local and state regulations, pediatric/school nursing, required records and reports, and equipment used in healthcare.
Skills / Effort
Ability to provide healthcare that promotes optimal student health; interpret and apply school policies, local and state regulations; integrate school health services with community systems; assess and monitor student health and development; identify need for further diagnosis and treatment; maintain required records; provide counseling; assist in reporting child abuse; interact professionally with staff, students, parents, physicians, caseworkers, psychologists, etc.
Working Conditions
Work in a school health room and/or classroom environment with exposure to diseases, medications, and blood/body fluid exposure; frequent contact with ill students. Moderately heavy physical exertion may be required to lift up to fifty pounds. Limited travel. Requires operation of standard office equipment.
Responsibility
No budgetary responsibility. Provides responsible supervision to students in the health room.
