Summary
The Cincinnati VA Medical Center is looking for a Social Worker in the Oncology Department who provides a comprehensive range of social work activities for all patients and families identified – regardless of the complexity of the problem. The oncology social worker will attend the Tumor Boards, Oncology conferences, staffing, and Oncology training.
Qualifications
Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
Education: Have a master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Graduates of schools of social work in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school is fully accredited.
A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master’s degree in social work.

Grade Determinations: Social Worker (Program Coordinator) – GS‑12 requires one year of experience equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level and must demonstrate advanced practice skills, judgment, and optionally post‑master’s training or certification.
Licensure/Certification: Individuals assigned as program coordinators must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and able to supervise who are pursuing licensure.
Demonstrated KSAs: Knowledge of program coordination and administration (consultation, negotiation, monitoring), policy writing, supervision of multidisciplinary staff, organization, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, evaluating program areas, and providing training or mentorship within clinical practice.
Assignments: Higher‑level duties must be performed at least 25% of the time and involve significant scope, complexity, and variety.
Program responsibilities (GS‑12): Administrative responsibility for a clinical program providing treatment to Veterans in a major specialty area; may serve as sole practitioner; provides direct patient care, oversees daily operations, develops policies and procedures, prepares reports and statistics, manages budget, performs data analysis, provides leadership and staff development, and conducts program audits.

Duties
Location: CVAMC is a two‑division campus located in Cincinnati, OH and Fort Thomas, KY serving 15 counties in Southwest OH, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana with six Community‑Based Outpatient Clinics at Bellevue, Florence, Lawrenceburg, Hamilton, Clermont County, and Georgetown. The CVAMC also supports two off‑campus locations in the Cincinnati area via an Eye Center and a Mental Health Outreach Community Division.
Incorporates complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges.
Delivers social work interventions (educational and clinical) through multiple modalities (face‑to‑face and/or Telehealth) as a primary function.
Provides educational information to veterans and their families regarding cancer and treatment‑related issues.
Educates referral sources, community agencies, Veteran Service Organizations, and other interested parties regarding the scope and management of this patient population.
Participates in goal‑sharing groups that address performance improvement and monitoring.
Administers information and analytical systems to evaluate and enhance service quality for patients.
Develops and implements systems to track visits, referrals, inpatient days, patient demographics, and equipment utilization.
Facilitates treatment and discharge plans for hematology and oncology admitted patients.
Develops and implements methods for measuring the effectiveness of social work practice and services in specialty areas using outcome evaluations.
Advocates for patients’ needs to help them meet goals and improve treatment experience.
Offers consultation to colleagues and students on psychosocial treatment of patients in specialty areas.
Teaches and mentors staff and students in the special area of practice and provides supervision for licensure or specialty certifications.
Performs duties independently, reporting to the Oncology Section Chief.
Meets customer needs while supporting VA missions.
Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and applicable federal regulations.
Protects data from unauthorized release, loss, alteration, or deletion.
Follows regulations regarding access to computerized files and releases of access codes.
