Salary
Annual salary ranges from $79,704 (Step 1) to $97,080 (Step 5). Initial step placement depends on experience.
Responsibilities
Complete journey-level plumbing work, including installing, replacing, maintaining and/or repairing all plumbing-related systems and equipment, air, gas, water, and sewer pipes, fittings and fixtures, according to approved codes.
Install and maintain low‑pressure vessels; cut, thread, and weld a variety of pipe such as copper and steel.
Identify causes for gas, water, and sewer leaks or malfunctions.
Replace worn or inadequate pipe, sheet metal, valves, fixtures, and traps.
Test pipe systems for proper operation and determine requirements for additional equipment.
Plan or modify plumbing and piping systems to accommodate new construction or existing facility alterations.
Estimate costs and materials required.
Read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, and sketches to perform installation, maintenance, and repairs.
Maintain records of work performed and prepare reports.
Takes water samples, performs simple chemical tests, and treats water supplies.
Maintain and repair items such as valves and pumps.
Supervise workers assigned to assist on various projects.
Plan, coordinate, and participate in performing rough and finished plumbing work from beginning to end.
Train and review the work of staff responsible for performing skilled plumbing and general‑construction duties supporting the maintenance, repair, and remodeling of college facilities and buildings.
Repair and maintain storm and area drainage system components.
Perform preventative maintenance and plumbing work; evaluate and recommend preventative maintenance programs; prepare and maintain maintenance records.
Oversee the use, care, and operation of a variety of plumbing equipment and tools, including but not limited to saws, snakes, drills, sanders, grinders, drill presses, and various hand‑tools of the trade.
Respond to and resolve routine and emergency calls for service.
Work from diagrams, blueprints, layouts, work orders, verbal instructions, or other specifications to install, troubleshoot, and test plumbing systems.
Serve as a technical specialist and assist with the operation, maintenance, and future expansion of district building automation systems.
Observe safe work methods and make appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
Assist other trades personnel as may be required to support them in the completion of their work activities.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Experience and Training
High‑school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of a recognized apprentice training program of at least four years’ duration in the plumbing trade.
One year of recent, full‑time, paid, journey‑level experience in the plumbing trade.
OR
High‑school diploma or equivalent.
Five years of recent, full‑time, paid experience in plumbing work under the supervision of a journey‑level or crafts supervisor, with at least one year at the journey‑level.
Education / License or Certificate
High‑school diploma / GED or equivalent.
Valid California driver’s license.
Minimum Qualification – Skill To
Install, inspect, maintain, modify, diagnose malfunctions, and repair plumbing systems and related equipment.
Make accurate measurements and computations.
Work effectively without immediate supervision.
Operate all plumbing equipment and tools effectively and safely.
Use and maintain a variety of power and hand tools.
Use test equipment accurately.
Utilize computer systems and software applicable to the plumbing trade.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Interpret drawings, sketches, schematics, plans, and blueprints.
Adapt skills to new plumbing systems and equipment.
Maintain accurate logs and basic written records of work performed.
Collaborate effectively with district staff, students, and outside contractors.
Perform heavy physical labor, including safely lifting and moving items up to 50 pounds, frequent bending and twisting, and continuous walking or standing.
Travel to and from any district college campus and/or facility.
