
Maintenance Technician

As a Maintenance Technician, you will provide technical expertise and participate in the maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance of facility equipment to reduce downtime while increasing operational efficiency in a validated, cGMP environment. The facility equipment may include machinery, buildings, computer systems, control systems, safety, and security systems. This position also includes responsibility for maintaining shop tools, inventory, and keeping the department’s CMMS updated, all while adhering to Lean and 5S principles. The role is fully on‑site, full‑time/permanent and requires physical strength and endurance.
What You'll do as a Maintenance Technician at STERIS
Perform technical troubleshooting on a variety of modalities, technologies, and locations.
Perform regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on high volume, validated processing equipment. Review preventative maintenance tasks for effectiveness and frequency and recommend continuous improvement changes or Lean practices for implementation to management.
Optimize processing and reduce downtime by performing predictive and preventive maintenance on all equipment, machinery and facility buildings; participate in the installation of new equipment as required; maintain electrical system, including facility lighting by installing and repairing wiring and fixtures; and perform general maintenance tasks, including landscaping, painting, and carpentry.
Contribute to maintaining a safe, secure and clean workplace by conducting the daily, weekly, quarterly and semi‑annual safety/maintenance inspections according to pre‑established guidelines and schedules; complete related paperwork in a timely and accurate manner to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, while adhering to all safety procedures, including Lock‑Out/Tag‑Out (LOTO), following Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and complying with all environmental requirements for waste and disposal.
Contribute to production efficiency by completing shift work in a timely manner as well as responding to off shift maintenance calls on a 24‑hour rotating schedule as assigned. Maintain a spare parts program, and either repair or defer action for immediate supervisor decision.
Maintain building climate by installing, repairing, servicing, or performing preventative maintenance on HVAC (Heating, ventilation, air‑conditioning) systems.
Strive for continuous improvement by analyzing new or alternative ways to improve operations, monitoring production efficiency, incorporating staff recommendations into analysis, responding to audit activities in a constructive manner and using findings to improve operations where possible.
Continuously maintain mechanical and technical skills, knowledge, and abilities required for the position by attending workshops, reviewing trade publications, participating in training and training others to conduct minor, basic repairs to equipment, machinery, etc.; completing necessary certification and re‑certification requirements.
Contribute in a team effort by performing in accordance with all STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles and other directives; support the directives and decisions of higher level management and perform other duties as assigned.
The Education, Skills and Abilities Needed
A completed High School Diploma or GED
Minimum of 2 years of related experience in positions demonstrating knowledge of maintenance systems, mechanical processes and production output in a manufacturing/industrial/military environment.
Ability to effectively read, write and verbally communicate in English.
Ability to work independently under general guidelines and supervision.
Computer literacy to include word processing, spreadsheet, email, calendar, virtual platforms, computerized maintenance management systems and software capabilities.
Effective interpersonal skills as demonstrated through prior experience.
Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
Preferred:
Previous PLC/control experience.
Able to adapt to changing duties and responsibilities and complete all other duties as assigned.
Working knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanics or electrical applications.
Additional Requirements:
Ability to meet physical requirements of position, including physical capacity evaluation testing and annual physical, as appropriate.
Ability to successfully complete Operator training (classroom and hands‑on) to become certified Operator and successfully pass Operator re‑certification test annually.
If required by the specific modality, this role is subject to passing Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) required background checks.
This position requires knowledge of English due to the nature of the duties involved, including regular communications outside the province of Quebec, training, email communications, and frequent meetings and interactions with English‑only employees.
