About the Valley Sanitary District
As a public wastewater treatment special district, we are committed to safely and sustainably collecting, treating, and disposing of wastewater, while also exploring beneficial reuse and environmental stewardship. Interns will work alongside experienced professionals across various divisions to gain exposure to operations, compliance, laboratory analysis, engineering, and administrative functions.
Position Summary
We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated student interns to support our mission of protecting public health and the environment through effective wastewater treatment and resource recovery. This internship provides hands-on experience in the operation, management, and engineering of wastewater systems and introduces students to the real-world challenges and innovations of the wastewater industry.
Internship Focus Areas
Interns may be placed in one or more of the following areas depending on academic background and department needs:
Operations & Maintenance
Environmental Compliance
Engineering & Capital Projects
Laboratory Services
Finance & Administration
Asset Management & GIS
Employees in this classification may perform any combination of duties assigned to this series. The following list of duties is intended only to describe the various types of work that may be performed and the level of technical complexity of the assignment(s) and is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of duties. The omission of a specific duty statement does not exclude it from the position if the work is consistent with the concept of the classification.
Example Responsibilities
Assist with plant performance monitoring, process data analysis, and report preparation.
Support wastewater sampling, testing procedures, and lab data entry.
Conduct site visits and assist with inspections of equipment or infrastructure.
Help prepare regulatory reports and maintain compliance documentation.
Participate in updates to standard operating procedures or safety documentation.
Support project planning, cost estimating, drafting, or AutoCAD-based design work.
Analyze energy use, biosolids handling, and water reuse metrics.
Organize digital and physical records using asset management or document control systems.
Preferred Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.
Basic knowledge of wastewater treatment processes or lab techniques (for technical tracks).
Familiarity with GIS, AutoCAD, or asset management systems is a plus.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Interest in public service and environmental protection.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed) will be considered. A person with the following training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process.
Current enrollment (junior, senior, or graduate level) or recently graduated from a college/university preferred.
Preferred fields of study: Environmental Science, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Public Administration, or a related field.
License or Certificate
Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and be insurable by the District for the operation of District vehicles. Possession of a valid State of California driver\'s license of the required category, compliance with established District vehicle operation standards.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
Available to work 10–20 hours per week during the school year or up to 40 hours/week during the summer (Max 1,000 hours annually).
Ability to work on-site during regular business hours.
Must provide proof of enrollment or recent graduation upon offer.
Must be at least 18 years old at time of appointment.
Additional Information
Internships are temporary, non-benefited positions with flexible start/end dates.
Terms may range from one semester to one year, depending on availability and performance.
Interns must pass a background check prior to appointment.
Work may occur in office, lab, or field settings depending on assignment.
Safety training and personal protective equipment will be provided where necessary.
