Job Description:
Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. Performs microscopic evaluation and reporting of negative gynecological cytology preparations. Evaluates and formulates an opinion for the pathologist on abnormal gynecological thin layer, non‑gynecological, and fine needle aspiration slide preparations. Correlates current cases with previous cytologic specimens where indicated. Conducts pre‑and post‑analytical activities related to tests, including specimen collection and processing, quality control, equipment maintenance, inventory control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing procedures. May perform molecular testing and/or ancillary testing from specimen vials, correlating with morphologic findings. Completes routine screenings for cell specimens, reports results, and documents daily workload records. Processes specimens for analysis according to specifications related to the type of specimen. Assists in the collection and processing of fine needle aspiration specimens. Demonstrates expertise in patient preparation, sample requirements, specimen collection, and pre‑analytical factors impacting sample quality. Documents and submits required laboratory, departmental, and staff statistics/reports. May assist in the collection of data for research or publication of papers and evaluates published professional literature. Participates in special projects and provides direction to clinical laboratory trainees. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Technical skills related to processing, staining, and cover‑slipping, including the handling and microscopic evaluation of gynecologic thin layer, irreplaceable fine needle aspirations, and fluid specimens

Ability to assist Pathologist, Radiologist, or Endoscopist in the slide preparation and collection of samples for ancillary testing during fine needle aspirate procedures, and perform RAPID on‑site evaluation of adequacy

Knowledge of all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, rules, and guidelines such as State, and related agencies, as well as adherence to Corporate Compliance Plans

Ability to read text and numbers, and effectively communicate verbally and in written form in English with patients, staff, and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner

Ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match, and problem solve

Ability to learn and apply computer‑related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices

Ability to work independently and handle confidential information with little or no supervision

Ability to prepare and examine human cell sampling slides for the presence of disease

Ability to screen preliminary microscopic slides containing human cells for abnormal cells, hormonal responses, and infection organisms

Ability to identify and mark abnormal cells for final pathologist diagnosis

Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the healthcare industry

Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals

Must be able to read, write, and speak conversational English

Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office

Education:

Bachelor’s [Required]

Master’s [Preferred]

Field of Study:

Successful completion of a CAAHEP accredited cytology or cytotechnology program OR certified by a certification agency approved by HHS OR qualified and served as a cytotechnologist in a CLIA‑certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. Required
