Overview
The Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) - Magnetic Resonance Imaging (M) position is assigned to the Diagnostic & Therapeutic Care Line (DTC) MEDVAMC - Radiology Service - Magnetic Resonance Imaging section. Technologist at this level requires advanced education in Magnetic Resonance Imaging and MRI-related applications, including IV catheter insertion for IV contrast injection and knowledge of general imaging radiography.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Certification
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiography (ARRT) (R)
Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include CT, MRI, or Mammography duties performed independently
Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and passed the designated examination
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program - evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree - accredited by JRCERT or other DOE-recognized accrediting agencies
Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35 requires compliance with credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75
May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees in this occupation who meet criteria)
Grade Determinations: Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - GS-10
Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position and demonstrating the required clinical competencies
Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, higher-level duties must be significant in scope, complexity, and range of variety
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): knowledge of radiation protection standards and techniques; ability to utilize advanced imaging software; knowledge of basic physics related to imaging; ability to position patients for complex imaging studies
Preferred Experience: ARRT registered - minimum 3 years experience

Duties
The technologist must understand superconducting magnets, MRI safety, cross-sectional anatomy, and RF surface coils for specific anatomical areas
Operate and optimize MRI procedures, develop techniques, and define protocols
Collaborate with radiologists, physicists, computer programmers, and biomed engineers in daily duties
Provide patient care appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturity of adult and geriatric patients
Position patients, monitor during exams, and ensure safe removal from magnetic field after data acquisition
Coordinate with radiologists and physicists to determine ideal MRI parameters for individual examinations
Program technical factors through the console to achieve desired pulse sequences and imaging results
Monitor examinations for accuracy and diagnostic quality of images
Assist/train radiologists, technologists, students, and other health care professionals in PACS usage and MRI workflows
Maintain supplies and records for MRI examinations; ensure proper patient identification and handling per policy
Rotate between MRI suites/scanners to maintain proficiency across modalities
Perform MRI imaging of spine, head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities using specialized sequences as needed
Work Schedule and Location
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 12:30pm-9:00pm; subject to facility needs. Location: MEDVAMC Radiology Service – MRI
