Overview
Summary: Exciting Opportunity. The Hampton Veterans Medical Center is seeking a Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing). The work requires practical knowledge of the techniques of medical laboratory practice, and the reports of findings of tests and examinations may be used by physicians in diagnosis, care, and treatment of patients.

Responsibilities

The Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization, and inspection of reusable medical devices (RMD).

Completes segments of work pertaining to the assembly of basic sets and trays for use in the medical center. Operates equipment involved in sterilization processes.

Prepares operating room case carts.

Prepares operating room case carts and is responsible for sterile preparation, accomplished through inspection, assembly, packaging, and terminal sterilization of all trays, sets, and packs for use throughout the facility.

Assemblies range from simple sets of four or five instruments to very complex sets of up to ninety instruments (e.g., total joint sets, vascular sets, abdominal/gynecologic/orthopedic sets, etc.).

Assembles delicate micro-surgical sets and selects the appropriate sterilizing method for a variety of equipment.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.

Experience and/or Education: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses (such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, operating room and surgical technician courses or other related courses).

Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Certification: None required.

Foreign Education: Education completed outside the U.S. must be evaluated as equivalent to U.S. education by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign credentials.

English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees in this occupation who meet criteria).

Grade Determinations: GS-06 (Full Performance Level) – One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and knowledge, skills, and abilities as described below.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.

Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.

Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures.

Knowledge of sterility principles in regard to instrumentation.

Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.

Preferred Experience: Sterile Processing Certification.

Physical Requirements

The employee usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties.

There is frequent requirement for lifting supply tote bins, baskets, or instrument sets weighing up to 50 pounds from the floor to chest level.

The incumbent regularly pushes loaded instrument carts weighing several hundred pounds.

Additional Information

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. Higher step rates may be considered based on qualifications.

Work Schedule: 2nd and 3rd shift (determined by Supervisor at time of interview).
