Laboratory Assistant II
A Laboratory Assistant II is responsible for the proper collection and processing of laboratory specimens under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, Assistant Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor, Medical Technologist II, Medical Technologist/Technician and/or Lead Lab Assistant. They are expected to be proficient in the laboratory information system and KPHC/EPIC to manage test pending lists/test reports, including filing, distributing and faxing, and to maintain supplies associated with laboratory functions. Excellent customer service skills, teamwork, professionalism, good judgment, critical thinking, and organizational skills are required. They work independently as the only laboratory staff on site at the assigned facility.

Essential Responsibilities

Serve as the onsite laboratory liaison for the facility, including maintaining temperature records, troubleshooting equipment out of range, recording action, and performing equipment maintenance. Assist in training new lab employees and nursing staff.

Collect laboratory specimens: perform venipuncture on all age groups, escort members for urine specimen collection, explain collection procedures, follow department policies and standard precautions, maintain a professional demeanor per regional policy, research and collect appropriate specimens, and ensure proper storage and follow‑up for patient take‑home tests. Respond to venipuncture requests outside the lab and execute emergency procedures, protecting PHI per HIPAA.

Deliver excellent customer service: greet members promptly, demonstrate competency in Cerner and HealthConnect/EPIC, use good telephone etiquette, and maintain a clean, stocked lab area while protecting PHI.

Process specimens: handle STAT, coagulation, and other time‑sensitive specimens immediately, notify technologist when STAT samples arrive, follow through with add‑on requests, and monitor pending functions to ensure all specimens are processed. Keep accession area clean and stocked with current supplies.

Maintain information: complete mandatory training, policy review, and competency requirements; participate in internal DHR inspections; attend department and facility meetings; read laboratory newsletters and Cerner pop‑ups; document quality issues and communicate to the supervisor.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Laboratory Assistant.

Education

High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

Basic Life Support required at hire.

Additional Requirements

Must demonstrate good customer service skills.

Must be able to work independently.

Must have a history of punctuality.

Must have a history of good attendance.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum one (1) year of customer service experience.

Completion of a phlebotomy training program.
