JOB SUMMARY
The Inpatient Rehabilitation Speech‑Language Pathologist provides comprehensive assessment, treatment, and education for patients with communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders following illness or injury.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
Education
Master’s Degree from an accredited program in Speech Pathology or PhD from an accredited program in Speech Pathology.
Licenses and Certifications
SLPL speech language pathology license to practice in Texas; intern license (Clinical Fellowship Year) accepted upon hire; active CPR upon hire; BLS required upon hire; must hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) issued by ASHA.
Preferred
Education
New graduates welcome with an intern license in Speech Language Pathology from the Texas State Board of Examiners.
JOB DUTIES
Requires prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking; lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients; lifts supplies/equipment as needed.
Has general patient care skills; demonstrates knowledge of therapeutic principles, practices good clinical judgement and does not compromise patient or another’s safety while maximizing patient’s treatment potential; passes competency reviews.
Adheres to all policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, and corporate compliance; maintains appropriate personal demeanor, appearance, hygiene; keeps patient confidentiality in accordance with University Medical Center Policy.
Completes speech therapy evaluations; reviews information from all sources; utilizes proper testing and measurement procedures; identifies and records problem areas; projects realistic goals; analyzes and designs treatment plans; assesses effectiveness; records patient progress accurately and promptly.
Prepares for patient discharge efficiently, including timely and accurate submission of equipment needs; displays good knowledge of patient resources and needs.
Works independently and in a team‑oriented manner; fosters teamwork, treats staff fairly, facilitates communication, assists co‑workers, covers other patients when needed.
Owns problem solving to the satisfaction of patients.
Organizes patient treatment time and unscheduled time efficiently.
Demonstrates basic computer knowledge.
Communicates openness to change or new ideas; learns and adapts to changes in work environment; remains flexible to fluctuating workload; prioritizes assignments; maintains control of emotions.
Exhibits a positive attitude supporting the hospital and management, respects resources, and reflects financial responsibility.
Presents constructive feedback on system or process failures and participates in resolution positively.
Responds promptly and appropriately to reasonable requests; communicates concisely.
Assists in on‑job training and education of Therapy Technicians, Students, and/or Nursing Staff.
Performs other related duties as assigned and accepts additional responsibilities as appropriate.
