Mechanic Foreman – Town of Rockport
The Town of Rockport is seeking a qualified Mechanic Foreman to maintain all town vehicles, diesel and gasoline equipment, heavy equipment, buses, and public safety vehicles. The position requires a reliable and safe operation of all equipment at approved standards, performing preventative maintenance, repairs, diagnostics, and cost‑effective improvements.

Supervision

Scope: Performs varied technical and mechanical duties with judgment and initiative to deliver competent service, working independently and with others; physical labor is required.

Received: Under the direction of DPW Administration (Director, Assistant Director, Operations/Facilities Manager) following technical standards related to vehicle mechanics, procedures and policies.

Given: To Mechanic Specialists and others as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

Read equipment specifications, repair manuals, and implement maintenance schedules; order supplies for vehicle and equipment maintenance and manage recalls.

Perform preventive and routine maintenance on lawn mowers, cars, light and heavy trucks, loaders, backhoes, tractors, mowers, public safety vehicles, buses, etc.

Prepare equipment maintenance records by completing work orders and recording job cost and time.

Carry out equipment maintenance and repair work ranging from checking fluid levels to engine/transmission disassembly, repair, and rebuild.

Takes part in capital budget process for vehicles and equipment.

Troubleshoot and repair electrical, hydraulic, mechanical and other equipment systems.

Test‑operate vehicles or equipment, discuss performance with operators; use lifts or jacks to analyze, test, inspect and determine cause of malfunction.

Grind, file, sand repaired surfaces; form, cut, weld, braz, and otherwise work and adhere metals and other equipment materials.

Use hand tools and power tools to repair damaged vehicle bodies and parts, repaint repaired surfaces with spray gun or related equipment.

Adapt or modify vehicles and equipment for safety purposes or emergency use.

Manage fuel storage tanks, meet regulations, order fuel, and maintain records of fuel usage.

Shovel snow, plow roads, sprinkle sand or salt on surfaces, and load own truck with salt for snow operations.

Coordinate external vendors for repair work of all vehicles and equipment.

Ensure all maintenance is conducted safely and all work safety practices are followed.

Call out to respond to emergencies outside normal working hours.

Serve as a truck driver or heavy equipment operator as needed.

Perform similar or related work as directed by DPW Administration or as situations dictate.

Stay updated on trends and efficiencies to enhance operations.

Assist other department staff to promote teamwork in serving the public.

Qualifications
To be considered, applicants must possess the following:

Education, Training and Experience: Advanced Technical Education in vehicle mechanics (diesel and gasoline vehicles) with three years of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance and vehicle driving experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. ASE (or similar) mechanic certification preferred. Diesel certification preferred.

Special Requirements: Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with airbrakes and tanker endorsements; Hoisting machinery license (class 2B/1C, 3A, 4G). Must obtain required licenses within six months of hire. Must submit to CDL DOT drug testing regulations.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Thorough knowledge of safe practices of maintaining, repairing, and driving heavy vehicles and operating heavy equipment.

Thorough knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance.

Knowledge of fuel storage tanks and fuel operations.

Knowledge of welding processes.

Working knowledge of Public Works Operations and the equipment used.

Working knowledge of safety procedures for roadways, hazardous materials and mechanical equipment.

Ability to diagnose and repair small engines.

Ability to manage parts inventory and supplies.

Ability to maintain maintenance records.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to work individually or in a team to accomplish a project.

Ability to read and follow safety procedures.

Ability to work long hours and perform physical labor.

Skill in using snow plows, CDL vehicles, mowing equipment, and various power and hand tools.

Aptitude for working with people, maintaining effective relationships, and providing good customer service.
