Summary
Performs general security work in the protection of persons and property. Provides support with enforcement of UNC Health security and safety regulations. Prepares reports and maintains proficiency in the department’s current report writing system. Gathers information, including video monitoring. Serves in specialized unit assignments and assists the organization to ensure adherence of applicable federal, state and local laws.
Responsibilities
Communications . Communicates effectively via two‑way radio, computer, email, telephone and verbal communications within the Hospital Police Department, with other law enforcement agencies, hospital staff members, visitors and patients.
Emergency Response . Assists with mental health patient custody issues, arranging transportation to other facilities, escorting patients to units, and providing immediate response for calls for assistance dealing with patient, visitor or employee behavior issues. Provides backup to Hospital Police Officers, responds to smoke, trouble or fire alarms, participates in the Emergency Response Team, assists in removal of unauthorized persons, maintains knowledge of emergency codes and hospital police response procedures, and responds appropriately to all emergency situations and activated security alarms.
Fixed Post Functions . Controls patient and visitor entry in the Emergency Department, operates metal screening system to prevent contraband, maintains parking lot surveillance, controls after‑hours entrance, and staffs other posts as needed.
Investigations and Incident Report Writing . Completes trespass, patient intervention and use of force reports with full narrative, takes custody of items, secures them, initiates risk assessments on D.O.C. inmates, patients and employees as required.
Patrol . Submits daily activity logs, is knowledgeable of the security‑sensitive areas, escorts employees, patients and visitors, provides after‑hours access to secured areas, collects inventories, patrols assigned area, reports security or safety hazards, locks or unlocks designated doors, ensures deceased bodies are processed properly, transports patient commitment documents, challenges suspicious persons, completes required patrols, and intervenes in violations of the UNC Health Care Tobacco‑Free Workplace policy.
Traffic Control . Conducts parking surveys, enforces parking regulations, initiates towing, reports equipment malfunction, writes citations for illegally parked or unauthorized vehicles proactively.

Education Requirements:
High School diploma or GED
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Valid North Carolina Driver’s license
CPR Certification before completed 12 months of employment
Professional Experience Requirements:
Requires one (1) year of previous work experience
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Requirements:
Proficient in oral and written communication; basic computer skills
