Printing Services at the University of Minnesota offers a comprehensive range of quality services that address the University’s full scope of communications needs. This position operates a variety of digital and conventional finishing equipment. Bindery operators perform complex operations and maintain established production levels that result in high-quality printed materials that support the mission of the University of Minnesota. This position is represented by the Printing, Packaging & Production Workers Union of North America, Local 1-B. Location and work environment: work is performed in a production environment located in Printing Services Building. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 A.M. - 2:30 P.M.
Primary Responsibilities
60% - Digital Finishing Equipment Operation
Set up and operate digital finishing equipment, including an Ibis Smart-binder system and slitter/cutter/creaser/folder for high-end digitally printed materials.
20% - Conventional Bindery Equipment Operation
Set up and operate folders, cutters, scoring equipment, small stitchers, drills, round corner machines, coil punches, coil binders, shrink wrapper, and other miscellaneous equipment.
Perform make-ready and operate equipment with optimal efficiency while maintaining high quality output.
10% - Communication
Work collaboratively with coworkers within the Bindery and with other work groups.
Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with all Printing and Mailing staff.
Interact with co-workers and customers in a positive and respectful manner.
Read and understand printed job tickets.
Follow established production methods to ensure successful finishing of printed materials.
Enter job information into electronic job management system and track each task completed for timekeeping and billing purposes.
Communicate effectively with supervisor and shipping staff.
10% - Maintenance
Maintain neat and organized work area.
Perform appropriate preventative maintenance procedures on equipment.
Follow established safety rules and procedures.

Essential Functions of the Position
Successfully perform digital and conventional bindery production work, including the efficient set up and operation of bindery equipment and completion of hand work tasks.
Follow established procedures, work collaboratively to meet established deadlines, and provide a high level of customer service.
Qualifications
Required
A high school diploma and 1 year of printing industry experience
Work requires knowledge of the print production process.
Proactive problem-solving skills.
Experienced setting up and operating a variety of conventional and digital finishing equipment.
Excellent mechanical skills and ability to troubleshoot problems.
Strong attention to detail.
Excellent verbal communication skills.
Ability to balance multiple work demands and to thrive in a changing environment.
Ability to work collaboratively with others.
Effective at managing time.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Experience operating digital finishing equipment
Ability to operate conventional bindery equipment

Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $32,224 - $58,822 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
Time Appointment: 85% Appointment
