Referral Coordinator role
The Referral Coordinator plays a significant role in the practice as they are responsible for the processing and coordination of all patient referrals. The referrals coordinator assists both external and internal providers and patients with the referral process for specialty care and diagnostic services. This position will require establishing and maintaining a positive relationship with all referral sources with a key component being executing the duties as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Qualifications
Responsible for the tracking, coordination, and communication of patient referrals
Ensures complete and accurate patient registration, including demographics and current insurance information
Handle requests from internal and external referral sources and provides relevant information for appointment scheduling
Receive information concerning patient’s clinical background and referral needs and uploads to patient electronic medical record
Prioritize appointment scheduling based on urgency and clinic workflow processes
Contact insurance companies to ensure verification of benefits and prior authorization approval requirements are met
Review details and expectation of referral with the patient
Respond to all referrals in a timely manner
Ensure updated communication is provided to referring source
Execute duties of position in a professional and courteous manner
Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
Perform other tasks and duties as assigned
Responsibilities
High school diploma or equivalent
Must be compassionate and the ability to establish confidence and trust with patients and all referral sources
Highly energetic with a positive attitude and strong attention to detail
Possess strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to perform as part of a team as well as work independently
One or more years’ experience working in a medical practice preferred
Experience in ophthalmology/optometry specialties preferred
Knowledge of medical insurance eligibility and authorization preferred
Basic computer knowledge required
Experience with NextGen, Microsoft, Clearwave, preferred
