Job Summary
To support teachers’ learning in K‑12 buildings, Reading Specialists will assist in implementing best practices in reading instruction. They will plan, collaborate, organize, model, and facilitate change to improve the instructional program, participate in coaching cycles, learning walks, professional learning communities, data analysis meetings, and lead professional development for building staff based on identified needs.
Qualifications
Current Michigan teaching certification with a Reading Specialist (BR) or Reading (BT) endorsement.
Bachelor’s degree.
Knowledge of Michigan Standards and Practices for reading and ability to implement them.
Understanding of the district’s reading curriculum and ability to help teachers gain a better understanding of it.
Knowledge of Michigan Essential Instructional Practices for early reading and ability to help teachers implement them.
Experience working with manipulatives to aid students’ understanding of reading.
Ability to implement effective teaching techniques in reading.
Work with teaching staff to assess student learning.
Assist teachers in providing differentiated instruction so all students can succeed.
Develop a collaborative reading community for teachers to share ideas, review student work, and understand reading concepts.
Essential Job Functions
Serve as a model and coach for teachers and related personnel in implementing district curricular programs and tools.
Model effective instructional strategies and assessment techniques in all classrooms.
Use diagnostics and data analysis to identify individual and school‑wide reading challenges; set goals and recommend intervention strategies.
Plan and consult with teachers to choose appropriate tasks and materials to support instruction.
Work collaboratively with district curriculum staff to support implementation of district curricular tools and resources.
Use a planning log for sessions with classroom teachers and special education staff to maintain focus on effective communication, evidence of professional growth, and instructional needs.
Make school and classroom decisions with administrators and teachers, based on continuous progress monitoring of student and teacher data.
Facilitate relevant professional learning for staff that supports highly effective reading instruction.
Regularly inform parents of progress using established school and district communication tools.
Consistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Compensation
$47,854 to $94,408 per year.
