Permanent, 12‑Month Position
Nature of Work
Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping duties in the care and maintenance of school buildings and facilities. Tasks include sweeping, mopping, using vacuum cleaners to clean floors, washing walls, woodwork, and fixtures, and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris. Content may also involve transferring equipment, custodial instrument repair, and audiovisual support as needed. Substitute Custodian assignments are defined as temporary and used as required.
Qualifications and Licensure
High school diploma or equivalent
General knowledge of standard methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials
Ability to follow instructions
Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments
Duties and Responsibilities
Sweep sidewalks and walkways outside buildings; police grounds, picking up debris; shovel snow and/or apply de‑icing compounds as needed.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, wax, and buff floor surfaces.
Scrub and clean bathrooms, including toilets, mirrors, wash basins, urinals, and sinks.
Fill tissue, towel, and soap dispensers, disinfecting as required.
Empty trash receptacles; deposit recyclable material in proper receptacles.
Dust furniture, walls, window sills, blinds, and other woodwork.
Clean windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures.
Clean drinking fountains.
Assemble, set up, and move furniture as needed.
Open and secure buildings at the start and end of each workday, turning lights on/off and adjusting heating or air conditioning as appropriate.
Organize storage rooms.
Unload and store supplies and deliveries.
Raise and lower flags at the start and end of each workday.
Perform minor appliance maintenance as abilities allow.
Prepare requisition forms to obtain necessary supplies for the workweek.
Set traps for rodents and other pests and discard trapped animals appropriately.
Arrange furniture for meetings or other events as required.
Perform all other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to push, pull, and carry or otherwise move objects.
Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motion.
May require working on ladders.
Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately when using janitorial equipment.
Requires the ability to handle a variety of items in janitorial work.
Must have minimal levels of eye‑hand‑foot coordination.
Requires the ability to talk and hear (express or exchange ideas by spoken words; perceive sounds by ear).
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Ability to read simple forms.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by assignments.
Must have a proven attendance record.
