Main area: Cardiothoracic intensive care and anaesthesia. Grade: Consultant. Contract: Permanent. Hours: Full time – 10 sessions per week (+ on‑call 1 in 7). Job ref: MS-CON-7838849‑S5.

Site: Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit, Oxford Heart Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, Town Oxford.

Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 per annum. Closing date: 08/05/2026 23:59.

The postholder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital, but the appointment requires willingness to work at any of the Trust’s other sites.

A whole‑time/part‑time consultant in Cardiothoracic Intensive Care is available. Candidates from Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine, or other specialties with an interest in ICU are welcome. Job sharing is considered.

Main duties of the job
This consultant will provide intensive care and anaesthetic services to cardiothoracic patients as part of a multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities include direct care of admissions, leading ward rounds, follow‑up outpatient clinics, consultations on critically ill inpatients, and provision of anaesthesia for cardiac, thoracic, and cardiological procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit provides Level 2 and Level 3 care to patients following cardiac and thoracic surgery and other cardiological procedures. The unit receives over 1,500 admissions per year and requires 24/7 coverage by a panel of seven consultants. Working pattern: 12‑hour resident day shifts and non‑resident overnight on‑calls. Consultants typically provide 6‑7 patient attendances per week, plus clinical duties in additional specialties as negotiated.

Key clinical responsibilities include management of advanced cardiac life support, such as ECMO, VAD, Impella, and haemofiltration, support for organ transplantation cases, and involvement in high‑risk surgical care.

Teaching and research are integral to the role. The post‑holder will participate in teaching clinical students, training doctors, and conducting clinical examinations. Participation in clinical governance activities, audit, risk management, and quality improvement is required.

Person specification
Qualifications

Full GMC Specialist Registration (CCT or equivalence)

Completion of a recognised training programme in Intensive Care Medicine and/or Anaesthesia

GMC registration with licence to practice

Experience in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and transoesophageal echocardiography

MD, PhD, DICM, EDIC, FFICM or equivalent

Completion of fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia

Echocardiography accreditation

Experience

Significant experience in the care of cardiothoracic and general intensive care patients

Evidence of decision‑making at consultant level and ability to manage complex clinical problems

Experience of advanced cardiac life support (ECMO, VAD, Impella)

Experience at consultant or similar level

Skills and Knowledge

Excellent leadership skills; ability to lead a clinical team in a teaching hospital

Organisational and management skills within the NHS
