As a Crossing Guard, you'll have the opportunity to make a positive impact by providing essential guidance and instruction on safe street crossings. Your duties will include escorting children across intersections, monitoring for any suspicious activity near school premises, and promptly reporting traffic accidents or hazardous road conditions.

Representative Duties

Provides instruction to school children regarding safe movement across city streets at assigned intersections. Instructs school children to wait at curbs for breaks in traffic. Escorts children across streets and halting traffic, as required. Reports persons or suspicious individuals found loitering near school grounds. Reports traffic accidents involving school children to Police Department staff and school administrators. Reports dangerous road conditions and missing or broken traffic signs to appropriate staff. Obtains and reports vehicle license numbers for traffic violators. Provides information and recommendations to supervisor regarding potential safety concerns at assigned locations. Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of: Traffic signals and basic traffic laws. English grammar and composition. Effective customer service techniques. Applicable safety rules, practices, and procedures. Reporting procedures in matters involving traffic violators and traffic accidents. Ability to: Communicate effectively with the public, employees, and children. Learn, interpret, and apply applicable provisions of the Santa Monica Municipal Code and the California Vehicle Code. Read maps and learn the location of City streets. Prepare simple oral and written reports. Observe and report hazardous conditions. Operate City vehicles and equipment. Provide effective customer service. Use independent judgment and make sound decisions consistent with the department's mission, vision, values, policies and procedures. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with City employees and the public. Skill in: Dealing effectively with a variety of individuals. Reading, writing, and communicating in English at an appropriate level. Education, Training, and Experience: Completion of sufficient education and/or training to read, write and communicate in English at a level reasonable for successful job performance. One year of recent, paid or volunteer experience working with the public. Experience working with children is desirable. Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C driver license. Possession of a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certificate is desirable.
