Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

Location : Lake Forest, IL (Core Diagnostics business unit)

Opportunity
This role supports Abbott’s diagnostics services by designing, building, and maintaining cloud platform infrastructure on Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes. The Engineer will work closely with application teams to deliver scalable, secure, and observable cloud solutions, ensuring efficient deployment, cost management, and continuous delivery across multiple environments.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, deploy, and release Cloud Platform Infrastructure on Microsoft Azure and Kubernetes using GitOps practices with Helm and Flux CD.

Build and maintain Platform Infrastructure components via Infrastructure as Code, including services such as observability, auditing, and shared platform capabilities.

Create, package, and manage Helm charts for PaaS and platform deployments.

Develop and operate centralized platform services on Azure (e.g., data pipelines, storage solutions, secure file transfer services) using resources such as Azure Data Factory, Storage, and SFTP.

Automate application and infrastructure lifecycle management on AKS using Flux CD and GitOps workflows across development, test, and other environments.

Partner with Application Development teams to support platform adoption, provide deployment guidance, and enable application onboarding to Kubernetes.

Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines, including build and release workflows using GitHub Actions for containerized workloads.

Document technical designs for cloud infrastructure, integrations, and new platform capabilities; collaborate with Platform Architects during design and implementation.

Perform root cause analysis and troubleshoot build, deployment, and runtime issues affecting platform infrastructure and applications.

Manage full cloud lifecycle: provisioning, scaling, monitoring, security, reliability, and cost optimization through platform design and Azure cost management.

Collaborate as an individual contributor within cross‑functional teams to deliver informatics and cloud‑based products.

Travel occasionally within the U.S. or internationally as required by project assignments.

Required Qualifications

B.S. in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline (Software, Electrical, Biomedical Engineering).

M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering is preferred.

5+ years of experience with Azure Cloud infrastructure and platform services (e.g., identity management, VPN, network access controls, data pipelines, storage, cloud security) or a master’s degree plus 3 years of experience in the same field.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong experience with Kubernetes and Helm Charts.

Azure and/or Kubernetes certification.

Experience with GitOps to manage infrastructure and application configurations.

Experience setting up robust observability and monitoring (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana).

Programming expertise in C, Go, or JavaScript.

Expertise in shell scripting.

Ability to review infrastructure architecture and implement based on Platform Architect input.

Knowledge of DevOps tools such as GitHub, Jenkins, and Artifactory.

Familiarity with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence) and requirement management tools like JAMA.

Familiarity with data privacy practices (e.g., GDPR) across cloud regions.

Familiarity with AWS.
