Overview
OBLIC is hiring for the position of Claims Counsel, handling professional liability claims against Ohio legal professionals. We serve Ohio lawyers and law firms as well as magistrates, judges, employed lawyers, law clinics and bar associations. We are looking for someone who wants to contribute to our ongoing work of providing high-level service for new and long-standing insureds.
The Company was formed in response to an ongoing insurance crisis among Ohio attorneys. Commercial carriers had been withdrawing from the lawyer’s professional liability (LPL) insurance market and prices for coverage were increasing. We have stayed true to our purpose and have earned an A (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best Company.
Reports To
Vice President of Claims; Board of Directors
Responsibilities
Manage claims and potential claims reported to OBLIC. Assist in answering claims-related questions from attorneys and assist other departments as necessary. Handle claims across the full spectrum of legal practice areas. Demonstrate a desire to learn, investigate, and analyze factual scenarios and potentially unfamiliar areas of law. Develop well-reasoned coverage and claim positions. Communicate complex factual and legal issues clearly in written and verbal form, including reporting to senior leadership, the Board of Directors and its committees, reinsurers, and other third parties as appropriate.
Be available during regular business hours: 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Monday–Friday. Some travel is required. Regular in-office presence during core business hours is expected.
Hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
Attend court hearings, mediations, and other legal proceedings, which may occur during standard business hours and occasionally outside those hours. Travel may be required.
Adjust claims reported against policyholders of the Company. Supervise retained counsel in the defense of such claims. Provide research materials to retained counsel. May assist in the defense of claims made against the Company. Report matters of relevance to the Board of Directors when required.
Ensure proper records and case reserves are maintained for all claims filed with the Company.
Assist in recommending training programs, instructional bulletins, manuals, etc., for the guidance of claims personnel.
Assist with the selection, evaluation, compensation, and termination of retained defense counsel.
Furnish technical advice and assistance on specific cases and situations as required.
Assist with required reports indicating the status and trends of claim activities.
Provide attention to existing and potential problem areas. Support new projects and growth opportunities the Company may pursue.
Maintain contacts with industry associations and bureaus; maintain contacts with trade associations and groups outside the insurance industry as required to serve the Company’s interests.
Attend meetings of the corporate staff or other required meetings.
Report to reinsurers those claims to be reported and report claim files that may raise issues of concern with the reinsurer(s).
Perform other duties as assigned by the President or the Vice President of Claims.
Some prior practical experience or civil litigation experience in areas such as Domestic Relations, Employment Law, Personal Injury, Probate, Estate and Trust, Professional Liability Claims, or Real Estate is helpful. Competency in Excel and MS365 is a plus.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor (J.D.) required.
Experience or familiarity with civil litigation in related practice areas is helpful.
Benefits
Salary range dependent on experience: $75,000 to $100,000
