Leidos currently has an opening on the ‘Service Management, Integration and Transport’ (SMIT) Contract for a
Field/Base Network Engineer
position. This role is part of SMIT, the largest IT services program for the Navy, supporting the Navy‑Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) with cybersecurity, network operations, service desk, data transport, and enterprise network integration. The position requires extensive operations/engineering leadership experience, a technical background in network/transport, and knowledge of a large Department of Defense enterprise network environment. Responsibilities include managing a virtual technical team, directly interfacing with the customer, and supporting incident response, change management, problem management, operations and maintenance, project sustainment, ITSM, and DevSecOps initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities
Operations‑focused network engineer on a team responsible for BAN/LAN/WAN network operations, troubleshooting, repair, installation, cabling, configuration, and integration of current and future NGEN‑R network architectures.
Provide COMSEC Local Element support, manage COMSEC hardware/software assets, load keys into encryption devices, and maintain compliance with COMSEC procedures.
Document work activities and details using established tools; maintain accurate site documentation.
Initiate software upgrades and changes to the NGEN‑R system and communications infrastructure as prescribed by Domain Architects and Design and Configuration Teams.
Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and removal/replacement of faulty hardware using SOPs, TTPs, vendor guidance, and documented procedures.
Interface with the Network Operations Center (NOC) for incident troubleshooting and restoration.
Support network configuration/asset management activities, manage configuration drift, and update network documentation.
Support cybersecurity requirements and implement security controls (STIG compliance).
Coordinate network upgrades and planned maintenance activities with NGEN‑R Program and customer stakeholders.
Monitor network system health and status; proactively identify potential issues and recommend corrective actions.
Possibly travel locally or overnight by car or air to assigned locations for operations, break/fix, or COMSEC support.
Physical Requirements
Lift and carry up to 50 lbs for up to 100 ft; lift 25 lbs vertically using ladders.
Work in confined spaces, raised floors, communication closets, and noisy environments; stand or sit for 8 hours at a time.
Use basic hand tools while rack installing equipment.
Have normal color vision and corrected vision 20/20; correct depth perception; read digital test equipment such as OTDR.
Drive a corporate vehicle and hold a valid state driver’s license.
Basic Qualifications
BA/BS and 4+ years relevant experience or MS/MBA and 2+ years relevant experience; alternate experience may replace a degree.
Availability to work off‑hours and weekends as required.
DoD Secret Security Clearance; ability to upgrade and maintain a TS Security Clearance.
Knowledge of defense‑in‑depth principles, network/HW/SW security architecture, network topology, and common security elements.
DoD 8570.01‑IAT Level II Certification (CompTIA Security+ CE, CDN, ISC ² SSCP, GSEC, GICSP, or CYSA+).
Network Vendor Associate Level or higher certification (e.g., Cisco CCNA, CCNP).
Travel ability up to 25%, including potential OCONUS travel.
5+ years troubleshooting complex routing and switching issues; 5+ years configuring switches, routers, network appliances, and WAN acceleration devices.
Customer service experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Top Secret Security Clearance.
Master’s degree in IT Management, Engineering, or related field.
MPLS experience.
DevOps, CI/CD experience.
Scripting experience (e.g., Python).
Automation experience (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
SDN/SD‑WAN experience.
Professional or Expert level vendor certifications.
ITIL certifications.
Compensation
Hourly range: $38.00‑$48.00 per hour. Pay is determined by education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, and contractual requirements.
