Responsibilities
Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center offers hope and healing for youth aged 7 to 17 who are admitted with psychiatric diagnoses or developmental disabilities. Located in Portsmouth, VA, we provide intensive residential treatment in a comfortable setting conducive to healing. Our facility specializes in treating children and adolescents with depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and other mental health issues, and offers specific programs for those with intellectual disabilities or self‑injurious behavior. Harbor Point and its programs are fully accredited by The Joint Commission and the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities, are licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and the Virginia Department of Education, and are TRICARE‑approved and certified.

We are currently hiring a full‑time Residential Counselor committed to improving lives and helping young people prepare for adulthood. The overall responsibility is to develop therapeutic relationships with residents and provide guidance and supervision.

Shift Schedule

1st Shift 6:45 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.

2nd Shift 2:45 p.m. – 11:15 p.m.

3rd Shift 10:45 p.m. – 7:15 a.m.

Job Duties

Contribute to the effective implementation of individual treatment plans through line‑of‑sight supervision, positive interaction and role modeling, scoring observed behaviors, and setting limits based on program definition.

Maintain safety and security of the facility by observing residents, ensuring optimal proximity, remaining alert, and proactively intervening in potentially volatile situations.

Promote residents' daily living skills through assignment, instruction, and supervision of tasks.

Stimulate residents' interest and cooperation in individual and group activities and programs with positive interaction, instruction, supervision, feedback, and encouragement.

Complete accurate and timely documentation of resident behavior per policy, report observations to relevant staff, and make recommendations, assisting with other behavioral reports and daily activity logs as required.

Provide crisis intervention as needed, anticipating escalations, using de‑escalation techniques, prioritizing safety, following restraint guidelines, and displaying neutral emotions.

Use counseling skills by de‑escalating aggression, employing active listening, appropriate tone and volume, frequent positive reinforcement, maintaining boundaries, and promoting a positive peer culture.

During school hours, act as the paraprofessional managing behaviors and assisting the teacher in the classroom.

Qualifications
Must be at least 21 years old.

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or a related field with coursework in Psychology and Child and Adolescent Development preferred.

Experience working with children and adolescents preferred.

Previous experience in a residential or psychiatric setting with children and adolescents preferred.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.

Valid driver’s license.
