Pay Range: $45.46 per hour

Pay Transparency: The above reflects the anticipated hourly wage range for this position if hired to work in New Jersey. The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Summary of Job Function

Embeds, cuts and mounts tissue sections for microscopic examination from processed and fresh tissue.

Prepares and performs routine and special stains for microscope evaluation as requested by physicians.

Performs additional tasks as requested by the Chairman of Pathology or their designee.

Qualifications, Education & Certification

Minimum two years of college with one year of specialized training preferred.

ASCP registration preferred.

Successful completion of all Orientation Programs.

Work Environment and Hazards

Well lighted, adequately ventilated environment.

Frequent exposure to biohazardous chemicals and specimens.

Physical Demands

Must meet requirements of the ADA.

Moderate amounts of sitting, standing or walking.

Occasional lifting of moderately heavy to heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Contact Group
All sections of the department, other departments within the medical center, physicians' offices, and occasional contact with patients.

Job Specific Requirements

Adhere to safety policies regarding safe handling and disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials, and sharps; maintain a clean and safe work environment and patient confidentiality.

Answer telephone giving information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guidelines.

Greet and route visitors.

Perform and document daily and preventive maintenance on instruments and equipment; perform and document QC procedures; resolve and document problems with QC or non-functioning equipment and notify Supervisor when additional action is required.

Recognize situations that must be brought to the attention of the Chief Anatomic Pathology Technologist, Pathologist or Administrative Director.
Resolve discrepancies and troubleshoot with necessary personnel.

Review on a periodic basis all policy, procedure and instrument manuals to ensure compliance and maintain current knowledge of procedures.

Unit/Dept Specific Competencies

Collects and prepares xylene for distillation and maintains distillation units.

Creates surgical and autopsy paraffin blocks for routine and special stains as requested by physicians, maintaining quality assurance to avoid cross‑contamination within defined turnaround time.

Embeds tissue with correct orientation in the block maintaining quality assurance to avoid contamination from one specimen to another within the defined turnaround time.

Examines samples of routine and specially stained slides to ascertain that results are satisfactory.

Files slides and paraffin blocks of surgical and autopsy cases in automated carousel filing system ensuring that they are properly filed and easily accessible.

Labels slides and correlates protocols with surgical cases using checkout system to ensure that each case is complete and slides are properly labeled.

Prepares solutions and reagents in accordance with standard laboratory procedures for use in routine and special procedures.

Prepares, cuts and stains tissue samples for frozen section maintaining in a defined turnaround time.
