Overview
As a Medical Assistant II, the incumbent will provide support to medical care providers in an outpatient/clinic setting. Responsibilities include clinical tasks such as rooming patients, setting up equipment and instruments, assisting with exams and procedures, cleaning and stocking exam rooms, and documenting in electronic patient charts. Patient-care duties include recording medical history, obtaining vitals, performing appropriate diagnostics, and preparing/assisting with minor procedures. Administrative duties include patient follow-up calls, prescription refills, clinic preparation, file preparation, appointment scheduling, billing submission, insurance verification, sending dictations, and related activities. The Medical Assistant II will maintain patient flow, provide some patient education, and interact daily with staff, supervisors, and physicians. The role requires working with minimal supervision and periodic progress checks to evaluate workload.
Responsibilities
Accurately document, record, and update patient history and other medical information in electronic and/or paper medical records as requested by the provider.
Perform necessary tests for providers to adequately diagnose patients.
May perform screening tests (e.g., vision, EKG, pulmonary function) within scope of practice as ordered.
May perform laboratory duties (e.g., drawing blood, obtaining specimens, urine analysis, and cultures) as needed and ordered.
May administer immunizations, injections, and medications within scope of practice and per provider orders, following storage and handling policies.
Assist physicians during minor procedures by setting up instruments, responding to needs, and reprocessing instruments after procedures.
Process medication refills including contacting pharmacies and determining the need for physician review.
Be willing to be trained and use newer technologies (training provided).
Educate patients on how to take medications and manage treatment plans.
Manage daily schedules to ensure appropriate patient intervals and flow.
Maintain and stock examination rooms with supplies and ensure equipment is cleaned and dated; remove expired materials.
Clean/disinfect instruments and equipment routinely and prepare supplies for diagnostic testing, exams, and procedures.
Provide basic maintenance of clinic equipment and ensure instruments and devices are clean, functional, and sterilized when needed.
Coordinate patient care by communicating test results and alerting providers to abnormal findings.
Respect patient confidentiality and maintain the security of all records.
Serve as liaison between medical staff and patients, coordinate patient education, and respond to patient questions.
Monitor and track work requests; perform tasks safely in compliance with policies and regulations.
Participate in front-office and administrative duties, including greeting patients, check-in/out, collecting payments, verifying insurance, scheduling, and obtaining necessary authorizations or records.
Maintain front- and back-office supplies and ensure a neat, organized environment.
Assist with abstracting, scanning, and cataloging paper records into electronic records; support department huddles and team meetings.
Adhere to KNOWN service standards and provide excellent customer service in interactions with patients and staff.
Explain consent and HIPAA forms, obtain signatures, and ensure patient completes questionnaires as needed.
Arrange patient transportation when requested and coordinate with scheduling and registration systems.
Obtain, document, and update patient information in appropriate systems and verify coverage with insurance providers.
Schedule follow-up appointments, procedures, and recalls as indicated by providers; input recalls into management systems.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant certificate/diploma program (specialized/technical training).
1 year of experience in an outpatient or ambulatory clinic setting.
Experience with an electronic medical record (EMR).
Ability to analyze clinical and administrative information and determine appropriate actions.
Ability to interact effectively with patients, staff, and physicians; strong multitasking skills; and ability to work as part of a team.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; strong written communication skills.
Professional work skills to handle fast-paced, high-pressure settings; knowledge of medical terminology and diseases.
Strong insurance verification and pre-registration background; knowledge of billing/authorization guidelines.
Ability to operate and maintain patient-related testing equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) or ability to obtain within required timeframe as applicable.
