Job Title: Plans Examiner – Advanced Level
Location: Department of Commerce & Insurance, Davidson County, Nashville, TN
Salary: $61,200.00 – $91,752.00 annually ($5,100.00 – $7,646.00 monthly)
Job Type: Full‑Time
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and experience equivalent to three years in one or a combination of the following areas:
Experience in engineering or architecture
Construction project management
Conducting fire or building inspections for buildings under construction
Reviewing architectural or engineering plans to determine compliance with fire and building safety codes
Skilled work in drafting, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, inspection or other related building maintenance or construction trades
Substitution of Education: Graduate course work in fire science, architecture, engineering or related field may substitute for the required experience on a month‑for‑month basis to a maximum of one year (e.g., 36 graduate hours for one year).
Substitution of Experience for Education: Qualifying experience in one or a combination of the above areas may substitute for the required education on a year basis to a maximum of four years.
Responsibilities
Evaluates plans and specifications to identify deficiencies and verify compliance with adopted codes and standards; interprets adopted codes, standards, rules, regulations, and procedures.
Communicates with building owners, designers and stakeholders to obtain and relay pertinent information for the plan review process and to achieve code compliance.
Attends training, classes, conferences, and seminars to stay up‑to‑date on code changes and new building products.
Maintains an advanced working knowledge of materials and methods involved in the construction of buildings, national codes and standards, and engineering and science as they relate to buildings and building systems.
Assists the Plans Examiner Supervisor on various tasks and maintains regular dialogue and communication on pending tasks within the unit.
Helps create and edit plan examination review checklists.
Assists in audits of local entities and governments in exempt jurisdictions to ensure appropriate plans examinations are performed.
Assists in the training of employees once vacancies are filled.
