The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County’s Elder Law Project provides critical legal assistance to individuals over 60 years of age. We are committed to protecting the rights of seniors and empowering them to live with dignity, independence, and security.
Job Summary
The Elder Law Project Attorney will provide comprehensive legal representation and advocacy to seniors in St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee, Indian River, and Palm Beach Counties. This position focuses broadly on elder law matters, including estate planning, guardianship, housing stability, public benefits, and protection from abuse and exploitation.
This role supports the expansion of services into the Treasure Coast and requires both individual client representation and community engagement. The attorney will represent clients holistically, utilizing litigation, negotiation, and advocacy to achieve client-centered outcomes.
The position requires travel within the assigned counties, participation in outreach efforts, and active involvement in community partnerships.
Work schedule is generally Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend work as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Represent elderly clients in a wide range of civil legal matters, including:
Estate planning (wills, advance directives, powers of attorney)
Guardianship and incapacity proceedings
Elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation
Housing and landlord/tenant issues, including eviction defense
Public benefits (Social Security, SSI, Medicaid, Medicare)
Conduct client interviews at office and community locations.
Counsel and advise clients on legal rights, options, and long-term planning.
Investigate cases, gather evidence, and coordinate with social service agencies and community resources.
Draft pleadings, briefs, motions, wills, and other legal documents.
Analyze client facts to identify legal issues and provide referrals when appropriate.
Maintain accurate client records, files, and timekeeping in LegalServer.
Build and maintain relationships with social service agencies, community partners, and government entities.
Deliver community education and trainings for seniors, caregivers, and service providers.
Participate in outreach events and serve on community, bar, or county committees.
Stay current on developments in Florida law affecting seniors.
Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all agency policies.
Foster a positive, collaborative, and professional team environment.
Position Requirements
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
Active member of the Florida Bar
1–3 years of legal experience (experience in elder law, probate, or litigation preferred)
Demonstrated knowledge of Florida and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Evidence
Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and e-filing systems
Ability to handle a diverse, high-volume caseload independently
Experience with community outreach and public presentations
Excellent organizational, project management, and time management skills
Strong networking and relationship-building abilities
Compassionate, client-centered approach with the ability to work with diverse populations
Bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not required
Willingness to travel throughout the Treasure Coast and Palm Beach County, with occasional overnight travel
Must pass a Level 2 background screening and internal conflict check
Salary and Benefits
Salary range depends on experience. Full benefits package in addition to salary includes:
Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks a year after two years of employment
Sick leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment)
13-15 paid holidays per year (depending on court schedule)
Health, dental and vision insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment)
Employer-paid short-term and long-term disability and life insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment)
Employer matches up to 5% of 401k plan contribution (eligible after one year of service)
Salary paid bi-weekly by direct deposit
