Part‑Time Instructor of Biology: Physiology – Arts, Science, and Human Performance – Columbia College 2025‑2026
Salary and Benefits
Hourly Range: $78.15 to $124.94
Doctorate Range: $92.09 to $128.22
Part‑time faculty office hours paid at $30 per hour.
Benefits: Not eligible for benefits (except workers’ compensation).
Scope of Assignment
Under the general supervision of the Division Dean, the instructor will provide lecture and laboratory instruction, evaluate student progress, advise students, and perform related duties as assigned. The instructor joins a department focused on curriculum responsive to student needs, increasing completion through equity strategies.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s in any biological science OR Bachelor’s in any biological science & Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR equivalent.
Eligibility determined by California State Chancellor’s Office.
Qualifications & Equivalency
The district adopts an equivalency procedure for applicants who may not directly meet the listed qualifications. Knowledge of and ability to appraise diverse student backgrounds; sensitivity to needs of diverse community college student population.
Physical and Mental Standards
Mobility: sit/stand long periods, move around office, reach above/below desk.
Dexterity: operate keyboard, handle papers, write, take notes.
Lifting: occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
Visual: close vision for reading files, documents, computer screens; adjust focus frequently.
Hearing/Talking: normal speech hearing, telephone communication, speak in person.
Emotional/Psychological: make decisions, concentrate, frequent contact and deadlines.

Teaching experience in Biology: Physiology at community college level, especially basic skills.
Current knowledge of Biology: Physiology.
Understanding of assessment processes for student success.
Competent in new pedagogies such as Universal Design and other equity‑focused methods.
Recent experience working with African American/Black, Hispanic, Native American, and other minoritized students; understanding of historical exclusion patterns.
Willingness to examine and remediate instructional and classroom practices to engage minoritized students.
Experience addressing equity issues and culturally responsive teaching in Biology: Physiology.
Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps in coursework and classroom.
Knowledge of Hispanic‑Serving designation practices.
General Job Duties and Responsibilities
Teach lower‑division Biology: Physiology courses (in‑person or online, evenings, Saturdays).
Advance equitable student learning through exemplary instruction.
Inform students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance.
Prepare and grade assignments and examinations; inform students of progress.
Maintain attendance, scholastic and other records and submit per policies.
Develop, implement, assess student learning outcomes; use results for improvement.
Engage in data inquiry and self‑assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, equity.
Participate in professional development to fulfill FLEX requirements.
Maintain current knowledge in subject area and effective teaching strategies.
Maintain professional conduct and ethics.
