
Assistant Biosafety Officer

Overview
Under the direction of the Biosafety Officer, assists in the development and implementation of the Clemson University Biosafety Program. Provides comprehensive health and safety program support and services. Job duties may include reviewing protocols, consulting with labs on biosafety controls and conducting inspections, risk assessments, and training. Acts in the absence of the Biosafety Officer and performs other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Lab inspection and monitoring
(25%), essential — Assists with inspections of laboratories for compliance with general lab safety, biosafety, and biosecurity regulations, and controlled substances. Conducts post-approval monitoring of laboratories under the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Cites deficiencies and assists in developing corrective action plans. Helps oversee the Biosafety Cabinet inventory and certifications. Monitors State and Federal Regulations for compliance. Coordinates research safety/field safety/occupational safety for animal users for AAALAC compliance.
Biosafety Committee Participation and Reporting
(20%), essential — Serves as backup to the Biosafety Officer as a voting member of the IBC and as a non-voting member of the IACUC. Provides technical expertise in protocol review/approval. Reports to the IBC any significant problems, non-compliance, NIH guideline violations, or significant research-related accidents or illnesses.
Training and Safe Handling
(25%), essential — Helps develop and implement training for safe handling, use, transportation, and disposal of biohazardous materials and recombinant DNA. Supports the Bloodborne Pathogen program, including BBP training. Develops and implements Laboratory SOPs and checks for compliance. Coordinates with the Biosafety Officer, Emergency Response Teams, and other OES staff on biosafety and lab safety issues. Monitors regulations to ensure compliance. Reviews construction/renovation plans related to biosafety. Maintains reference documents such as the Exposure Control Plan and the Biosafety Manual.
Regulation Guideline Assistance
(25%), essential — Assists researchers in complying with regulations, guidelines, policies, and directives governing research involving recombinant DNA, infectious/pathogenic agents, other biological agents and toxins. Reviews and responds to lab safety incidents and documents findings and corrective actions. Provides guidance based on reviews/investigations. Supports the Controlled Substances Program on campus.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Education - High School or Equivalent and experience with biosafety programs. A bachelor's degree in science or engineering may be substituted for work experience.
Work Experience - 1+ years lab work or safety-related experience
Preferred Requirements
Education - 1st Bachelor's Degree in science or engineering with research experience or coursework in genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, and chemistry. Preferred education areas: Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biology, or Microbiology.
Work Experience - 2–5 years with pathogenic organisms, rDNA work, animal or plant research. Biosafety experience in an academic or research environment.

Compensation Information
Anticipated Salary Range ($52,100.00 – $60,000.00). Salary is dependent upon factors including previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
Additional Information
Essential Personnel Level – Normal Operations. Required to follow emergency facility closure directives; not normally expected to work on-site during emergency situations.
