Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. The Chesterfield Health District provides public health services to the residents of Chesterfield County, Powhatan County, and the City of Colonial Heights. This position is based in Chesterfield and requires some travel to other clinics within the district.

Responsibilities include routine clinical tasks such as collecting and documenting patient vital signs, assisting nursing staff with clinic flow, aiding clinicians with specimen collection, performing adult and pediatric venipuncture and capillary sticks, and conducting clinical laboratory tests including hemoglobin, glucose, urine pregnancy, and urine dipsticks. Duties also involve sputum sample collection, assessing patients for changes in condition per VDH protocols, sterilizing instruments, inventorying and ordering supplies, maintaining logs, files, and records, collecting clinical data, compiling statistics, and working under the supervision of a licensed provider. Evidence of specific training in specialized duties is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience performing health screening tests and procedures, including venipuncture; phlebotomy experience and documentation of phlebotomy.

Knowledge of basic clinical and laboratory procedures and medical terminology.

Ability to work with patients of all ages and ethnicities and work as part of a team; excellent customer service and communication skills; problem solving, following directions, setting priorities, and time management; ability to provide patient referrals based on clinician orders; complete patient labs as needed and perform clerical activities such as greeting patients, scheduling appointments, filing documents, and using computers.

Familiarity with specimen collection and processing.

Required to maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to VDH’s driver safety policies.

Additional Considerations

Experience in public or health care settings and cleaning and sterilization of surgical equipment.

Office support experience in a medical setting and bilingual communication skills in English and Spanish, Arabic, or Nepali.

Certified as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Patient Care Technician.

VDH requires all Health Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine; and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.
