Job Summary
The HVAC Mechanic will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of HVAC equipment at a Journeyman level of service. This position will also handle emergency after‑hours callbacks as determined by the facility coordinator.
Pay Rate : $58.04 per hour.
Union Position
Shift : Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Essential Job Functions
Provide Journeyman-level HVAC maintenance support expertise.
Perform maintenance, diagnostic testing, overhauling, installation, and repairs on refrigeration, dehumidification, air‑conditioning, ventilation, and heating systems in controlled environments.
Research specifications, apply installation corrections to ensure proper function according to tenant agency requirements.
Perform preventative maintenance, including changing filters, cleaning cooling towers, coils, etc.
Carry out building maintenance tasks including adjustments and repairs to HVAC and electrical systems.
Work independently or in teams, making decisions and recommendations on HVAC operations and maintenance.
Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork and chassis parts using metalworking tools and welding equipment.
Install evaporator units in chassis or air‑duct systems with hand tools.
Cut and bend tubing to correct length and shape, thread pipe using machine‑threading or hand‑threading equipment.
Join tubing or pipes to refrigerating units using sleeves, couplings, or unions; solder joints with torch.
Install expansion and discharge valves in circuit.
Connect motors, compressors, temperature and humidity controls, and ventilation fans to control panels and power sources.
Install air and water filters in completed installations.
Inject refrigerant into compressor, add Freon gas to achieve prescribed operating pressure.
Observe pressure and vacuum gauges; adjust controls to ensure proper operation.
Test joints and connections for gas leaks using gauges, electronic leak detector, micron gauge, or soap‑and‑water solution.
Wrap pipes in insulation batting and secure with cement or wire bands.
Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring, using electrician's hand tools and test equipment.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Skills, Experience, and Education
Minimum of 5 years of progressive, hands‑on experience in commercial or industrial settings in large, complex environments.
Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License.
EPA Universal certification.
HVAC Journeyman License.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Ability to read, write, and speak English.
Knowledge of computers and basic computer applications.
Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics.
Ability to communicate with a wide range of personnel.
Equipment Used
Tools related to HVAC maintenance and repair, test equipment, and safety gear.
Physical Requirements
Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop for long periods.
Capable of lifting up to 75 lbs.
Requires use of arms, hands, and fingers to reach, handle, and feel.
Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
Requires endurance for physical labor for long periods.
Once certified, willing to work in confined spaces.
Working Environment
Work both inside and outside the facility.
May need to work on roof or in basement and confined spaces.
May experience high levels of noise from equipment and tools.
May be exposed to wet or humid conditions.
Must wear required PPE.
Must participate in training for confined spaces, including breathing apparatus fit testing.
