Your Team
The Office of Asset and Property Management (APM) leads the agency’s effort to protect the City’s investment in affordable housing and ensure that properties remain stable and affordable over the long term. APM actively monitors the performance and regulatory compliance of projects sponsored, supervised, and owned by the City, and connects people to affordable housing opportunities.

The Office of Asset and Property Management (APM) is composed of three divisions, which includes the Divisions of Asset Management, Property Management, and Housing Supervision.

The Division Property Management, which provides technical resources to all areas of the Office of Asset and Property Management (APM), assists in supervision of repairs and maintenance of Family Centers, monitoring construction, repair work, preparing repair scopes, violations removal and other technical assistance.

Your Impact
As the Assistant Mechanical Engineer, you will work closely with the Deputy Director.

Your Role
Your role as the Assistant Mechanical Engineer will support the design, inspection, and maintenance of mechanical systems within HPD-managed buildings and facilities. Under general supervision, the selected candidate will assist in ensuring that all mechanical installations and repairs comply with NYC Building Codes, agency standards, and energy efficiency requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Assist in the design, review, and preparation of plans and specifications for HVAC, plumbing, and other mechanical systems.

Conduct field inspections to verify installation and operation of equipment, including boilers and elevators.

Perform annual boiler and gas line inspections as required under HPS and Local Law 152.

Troubleshoot mechanical equipment failures and prepare recommendations for corrective action.

Support preventive maintenance planning and energy efficiency initiatives.

Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and project documentation.

Ensure work meets safety, quality, schedule, and budget requirements.

Coordinate with internal departments, contractors, and vendors to resolve technical issues and support project delivery.

Prepare reports and maintain accurate project and inspection records.

Minimum Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechatronics and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; or

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; or

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a master’s degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering or mechatronics.

Preferred Skills

Knowledge of mechanical system design, installation, and maintenance practices.

Familiarity with NYC Building Code, ASHRAE standards, Local Law 152, and related regulations.

Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar design software.

Experience with municipal or institutional building systems.
