
MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE / EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS HOMELESSNESS

Mental Health Advocate (Emergency)
This role is part of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ Emergency Recruitment initiative to respond to the homelessness crisis. Mental Health Advocates will directly support individuals experiencing mental health challenges, homelessness, and related services.
Essential Job Functions
Communicates, represents, and promotes the mental health services consumer’s perspective within the continuum of care.
Orients consumers’ family members, significant others, and caregivers to the mental health system, helping them navigate services and receive necessary support.
Facilitates access to departmental and community resources, assisting with scheduling appointments and transportation or accompanying the consumer to meetings that impact service receipt.
Assists clients in developing independent living skills, such as housekeeping, cooking, shopping, budgeting, using public transportation, and attending to personal grooming and hygiene through demonstration and coaching.
Assists clients with housing needs by facilitating access to residential care or permanent housing.
Facilitates clients’ participation with multidisciplinary teams by assisting in formulating service goals and plans for achieving those goals.
Conveys community and client cultural patterns and attitudes to mental health professional staff.
Assists clients with obtaining and completing appropriate application forms for various benefits and services.
Leads recovery dialogues and discusses common transitional experiences.
Acts as interpreter for the client population.
Recruits and trains volunteer mentors for clients transitioning into community living settings.
Participates in conferences and meetings within the Department of Mental Health.
Accompanies clients to appointments and self‑help activities.
Attends seminars and in‑service trainings related to duties as assigned.
Requirements
Six (6) months of full‑time paid or volunteer experience in mental health advocacy, including interacting with clients about mental health or social services matters, providing information about benefits, and coordinating group facilitations.
OR completion of a recognized peer, parent, or family advocate training program.
Applicants must meet the above requirement(s) at the time of filing to be considered for appointment.
Valid California Class C Driver License or ability to utilize alternative transportation methods.
Physical capability to perform light physical effort, including occasional light lifting up to 10 pounds, bending, stooping, squatting, and ambulation.
Experience evaluated on the basis of a verifiable 40‑hour workweek; part‑time experience will be prorated.
To qualify under Option II, a copy of the Training Certificate must be submitted with the application.
