Scope Of Responsibility
Reporting to the Manager of Engineering, the Sr. Design Engineer is responsible for the quality and on time delivery of designs for the steel pole transmission industry. This position is also responsible for improving processes that impact key operational metrics, establishing deadlines, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Duties
Responsible for the daily operations of the Engineering; personnel, systems, processes and Continuous Improvement initiatives (CI)
Take the lead creating and building a high performing Engineering Dept. that can exceed the demands of the business
Improving and enforcing the technical Engineering standards and procedures, and continued development of the Engineering Design software
Collaborate and consult with other business leaders on Engineering improvement initiatives
Establish metrics and goals to monitor productivity, efficiency and quality as compared to target goals
Conduct root cause analysis on quality issues and implement corrective and preventative action
Handle in-house training on CI tools and methodologies and guide employees
Lead team meetings, document clear actions and enable timeline achievement
Implementing short and long-term strategies to ensue organization excellence
Take the key role on large projects: supervise with team and collaborate with managers to re‑engineer the current process to improve quality of work
Actively seek and supports continuous improvement initiatives to increase workflow and efficiencies
Stay up to date with Inventor features and design software technologies
Maintain a positive working relationship with all levels of the company
Other job‑related duties as requested
Ability to manage and develop a team through the transfer of knowledge, communication and defined training processes
Proactively seek to affect change by implementing methods that prevent recordable errors
Must be experienced with managing a team
Position Requirements
Education: Engineering Master’s Degree; Civil or Mechanical preferred.
Experience: 5+ years team leadership experience in a Steel Utility Structure manufacturing or related environment.
Skills & Abilities
Strong knowledge of PLS pole software
Strong understanding of lean/continuous improvement concepts, principles and practices
Have interpersonal skills to deal effectively with all business contacts
Professional appearance and demeanor
Knowledge of principals involved in production of technical fabrication drawings, and models
Detail oriented with ability to drive results
Good Communicator both written and spoken
Identify opportunities and recommendations for increasing workflow and financial efficiencies
Stay up-to-date with AutoCAD features and design software technologies
Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology
Excellent Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry
Knowledge and experience with 3D design and applications
Must have excellent active listening skills
Must have excellent mathematic skills
Must have excellent active learning skills
Physical Requirements
Must be able to perform work in any environment and various weather conditions such as rain, sleet, snow and extreme cold and heat
Must be able to regularly use hands to grasp, pinch or pull materials
Must be able to feel and reach with hands and arms
Must frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch
Must be able to climb in and out of equipment
Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 lbs., frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Must be able to pass the commercial driver’s vision test requirements
