
BGS Maintenance Mechanic II

Overview
The Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Mechanic to join our team in Waterbury. This role is essential in keeping our facilities safe, functional, and welcoming for staff and the public.
The Maintenance Mechanic will perform routine inspections to catch issues early, carry out preventive maintenance, and complete general building repairs. The position will also support seasonal tasks like snow removal, groundskeeping, and graffiti removal to keep our sites in top shape.
Duties
Conduct routine inspections of equipment and building systems to identify potential issues.
Perform preventive maintenance, including lubricating moving parts, changing HVAC filters/belts, replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles, painting, and completing minor plumbing repairs.
Provide general groundskeeping services such as mowing, trimming, graffiti removal, and snow/ice removal.
Respond to building maintenance needs promptly and effectively.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Two (2) or more years of experience in building construction, structural maintenance, or building repair and maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications: Completion of a vocational/technical training program in building trades, mechanical repair, industrial arts, or a closely related field.
Other Requirements
Must have a valid driver’s license and may need own transportation for travel between work sites.
A criminal background check and/or child abuse registry check may be required based on the locations where duties are performed.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with some overtime expected.
Environmental Factors
Duties are performed at state buildings including correctional facilities. Contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must respond calmly and professionally. Must climb ladders, lift up to 75 pounds, work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas, and wear protective clothing when needed. Work in all types of weather is anticipated; emergency response outside of regular hours may be required. Some potential for physical injury may be present.

Starting pay may be negotiable based on experience and education.
