Veterinary Technician 2: Large Animal Surgery

Position Summary
Veterinary Technician 2, Large Animal Surgery – full‑time position within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Oregon State University’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine.

Key Responsibilities

Provide veterinary patient care, including assisting in surgeries, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, and critical care.

Assist and train students in basic veterinary techniques.

Support clinical services across all veterinary teaching hospital areas – internal medicine, specialty medicine, theriogenology, rural veterinary service, etc.

Respond to emergency and after‑hours duties.

Maintain patient records, controlled drug logs, and equipment.

Requirements

Current Veterinary Technician certification; must obtain Oregon certification within six months of hire.

Demonstrated experience with animal handling and restraint in a clinical setting.

Proficiency in drugs, aseptic techniques, patient preparation, medical terminology, operating room procedures, anesthesia equipment, record keeping, animal anatomy and physiology, lifesaving techniques, and veterinary care procedures.

Basic mathematics for drug dosage and fluid rate calculations.

General computer skills.

Valid driver’s license may be required.

Commitment to complete a criminal background check; position is security‑sensitive.

Preferred Qualifications

≥2 years of experience providing medical care for large animals in a veterinary teaching hospital or private clinic.

Extensive knowledge of all aspects of veterinary nursing for large animals.

Ability to instruct others in veterinary techniques.

Excellent verbal and written communication; interpersonal skills.

Experience working in teams and promoting an inclusive workplace culture.

Working Conditions and Schedule

Hospital operates 24/7; weekend, holiday, overtime, evening, on‑call, and weekend shifts may be required.

Work primarily with large animals in a busy teaching hospital.

Exposure to noxious odors, chemicals, gases, radiation, loud noises, wet and slippery surfaces, and machinery.

Controlled drug handling responsibilities; must adhere to drug log requirements.

Typical lifting or carrying of up to 50 lb, pushing or pulling up to 200 lb; frequent walking, standing, running, stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling, and crawling.

Rabies vaccination provided at employer’s expense (optional).

Compensation
Hourly salary range: $28.75 – $44.00. Pay period is the 16th to 15th of the following month; pay date on the last working day of the month.
