Job Summary
The Traveling Data Center Technician II is responsible for installing, maintaining, and supporting fiber optic and copper cabling infrastructure across multiple data center and construction site locations. This role requires frequent travel and hands‑on technical expertise in cable installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting. The technician must be adaptable, safety‑focused, and capable of working extended hours in dynamic environments while maintaining high‑quality standards and professional communication.

Job Responsibilities

Pull, dress, terminate, test, and patch fiber optic and copper cabling

Install and support 12‑strand fiber, copper, and Cat6 cabling systems

Perform cable dressing, labeling, and routing according to industry standards

Conduct Fluke and OTDR testing on fiber and copper infrastructure

Install, terminate, and troubleshoot single‑mode and multi‑mode fiber systems

Build and install data center infrastructure, including racks, cabinets, patch panels, ladder racks, and fiber trays

Mount and install backboards, cross‑connects, and related hardware in telecom closets

Perform Outside Plant (OSP) installations, including running fiber into facilities

Read and interpret blueprints and technical diagrams for accurate installations

Rack and stack equipment and complete rack elevations

Receive, organize, and assemble materials and hardware on‑site

Maintain flexibility to support varying tasks and rapidly learn new skills

Travel to multiple job sites, including colocation and new construction data centers

Adhere to all safety standards, including proper PPE usage and OSHA compliance

Maintain clean and organized job sites and ensure proper documentation of work performed

Job Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent

Minimum 2 years of experience in data center or structured cabling environments

Demonstrated experience with copper and Cat6 termination

Experience with fiber optic installation, including testing and troubleshooting

Ability to perform OTDR testing (144 strand preferred) and Fluke testing for fiber and copper

Experience building telecom closets, including racks, patch panels, and cross‑connects

Understanding of cable color codes and industry standards

Ability to read and interpret blueprints is preferred

OSP experience is highly preferred

Splicing experience is a plus

Ability to stand for extended periods, work long shifts including weekends, and lift up to 50 pounds

Ability to work in confined spaces, on ladders, and on lifts

Willingness and ability to travel frequently for project assignments

Required tools include snips and composite‑toe boots; additional PPE will be provided

Education

High school diploma or GED required

Industry certifications such as BICSI Installer 1 or 2, CFOT, or OSHA 10 are preferred

Work Experience

At least 2 years of hands‑on experience in data center environments, structured cabling, or related infrastructure roles

Frequent travel is required to various job sites, including colocation and new construction data centers

Preference for candidates who reside regionally, ideally within approximately a 6‑hour travel radius of primary job sites

Typical start time is 7:00 AM

Standard work schedule is approximately 50 hours per week, typically consisting of five 10‑hour shifts

$50 per diem provided for travel assignments

Must be available to work extended hours, including nights and weekends as project demands require

Position requires being on‑site for the duration of assigned projects and maintaining consistent attendance
