Duties Description
A Trades Specialist (Electrician) is responsible for all electrical work including planning and laying out of work and diagnosing trouble in electrical systems or equipment in an assigned area, on an assigned project or for an entire facility.

Performs journeyman‑level electrical duties.

Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the electrical trade.

Repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems and equipment, including fixtures, motors, load centers, relays, controls, circuitry, and related equipment in accordance with the National Electrical Code.

Locates and determines electrical malfunctions using test instruments such as ammeter, voltmeter, and ohmmeter.

Plans new or modifies installations consistent with specifications and national electrical code.

Plans and lays out work, develops time and material lists for assigned projects.

Reads and interprets plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.

Tests, adjusts, calibrates, and maintains a wide variety of control equipment, including building heating, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment controls for refrigeration and other systems.

Performs maintenance, preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment including bathroom exhaust fans, clothes dryers, sump pumps, and generators.

Trains and supervises others.

Climbs ladders, works from scaffolding and mechanical lifts.

Job Requirements

Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the craft.

Knowledge of applicable standards and plumbing and electrical code regulations.

Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the activities of State wards.

Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment, and material of the craft.

Ability to train and supervise others.

Ability to plan, lay out work, and diagnose problems.

Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.

Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Minimum Qualifications
Trades Specialist (Electrician) – Non‑competitive: Four years of full‑time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson, providing training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completing technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; or successful completion of the two‑year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two‑year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association‑Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

The traineeship includes 288 hours of trade‑specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework with an average of a “C” or better. Successful completion also includes 4,000 hours of on‑the‑job training.

Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1
Full‑time permanent service in a position allocated at Grade 12 or below, primarily engaged in unskilled and/or semi‑skilled labor and trade tasks; must be 18 years of age or older; possess a high‑school diploma or general equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; and be proficient in English and math.

Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 2
Successful completion of a 52‑week probationary period as a Trainee 1; or completion of 45 hours of technical math coursework and 15 hours of blueprint reading/schematics coursework, or passage of an equivalency exam or proof of successful completion of equivalent training, 144 hours of electrician trade‑specific instruction, and 2,000 hours of on‑the‑job training. Trainees must maintain a “C” or better average in their coursework.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license and maintain it appropriately for the type of vehicle to be operated.
