Intermediate Civil Engineer
Our Kennesaw Civil Team is seeking an Intermediate Civil Engineer to work out of our Kennesaw, GA office.
This successful candidate will provide local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Tasks may include basic assistance with research, design, concept development, and construction of roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, bridges, water supply systems, and sewage treatment. The candidate will generate accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project and ensure that responsibilities are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Your Impact
Prepare comprehensive land development/site civil design documents, including demolition plans, site layout, grading plans, utility design, erosion control plans, and stormwater management design.
Develop conceptual site layouts and preliminary design plans to support feasibility assessments, proposals, and client presentations.
Assist with the preparation of technical reports outlining methodology, findings, calculations, and basis of design, as well as due diligence studies to evaluate zoning, environmental constraints, infrastructure availability, and local ordinances.
Support permitting efforts and coordinate with regulatory agencies and plan reviewers to ensure timely approvals and compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.
Under general supervision, collect, compile, and analyze data from the site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
Assist with performing basic to intermediate civil engineering work, including research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
Perform routine engineering functions and provide intermediate level technical support on design strategies that prioritize safety, sustainability, operational efficiency, and compliance with regulations.
Assist in verifying site characteristics and providing intermediate technical input on engineering, design, and construction challenges.
Produce complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and fieldwork logs.
Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures, including data management, surveying, engineering studies, and construction.
Complete training on assigned tasks.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an ABET accredited university.
1 to 3 years of relevant post‑education experience in site civil and land development.
Experience in site design for utilities, industrial facilities, municipal infrastructure, storm drainage and stormwater management, site grading, roadway and utility design, sanitary sewer design and analysis, construction specification development, and construction bid package development.
Experience using Autodesk Civil 3D and associated design extensions such as Storm Sewers, Hydrograph, and Hydraflow Express.
Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
Knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others.
Proficient self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization.
Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets, and related tools.
Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Experience with design software beyond Civil 3D (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS).
Previous college internship and post‑university experience related to civil engineering and land development.
Membership in local professional practice organizations such as ASCE, ACEC, NSPE, or similar.
