
Emergency Room Tech

Job Summary And Responsibilities
As an Emergency Room Tech, you will support safe, cost-efficient patient care in the Emergency Department, performing delegated functions from the RN or Physician. Every day you will conduct selected diagnostics and procedures, assist with patient transport and lifting, and provide general clerical and cleaning support to the unit. To be successful in this role you will effectively execute delegated tasks, support unit operations, and contribute to a safe and efficient environment.
Responsibilities
Takes and records vital signs (including orthostatic vital signs)
Collects and transports specimens, requisitions, etc.
Performs initial wound care, applies simple non‑sterile dressings
Controls bleeding by direct pressure
Immobilizes and/or elevates injured extremities as ordered by physician
Applies ice bags to injuries
Prepares patients for physical examination
Assists with routine examinations and procedures
Sets up suture trays and other supplies for the physician
Performs visual acuity exams as instructed
Transports patients
Assists in moving and/or transferring patients to gurney or bed
Adjusts crutches to patient's height
Assists in restraining patients when instructed by the RN or physician
Assists RN in lavaging patients
Checks par levels of supplies and reports same to appropriate person
Cleans and stocks the examination areas daily using a check‑list
Assists the nursing staff in providing for comfort and safety needs of the patients
Assists in escorting of visitors to and from the patient care areas of the ED
Provides relief for the ED Unit Secretary during breaks and assists during especially busy times
Places patient on monitors (cardiac and pulse oximetry) as instructed
Performs 12‑lead EKG according to unit guidelines
Makes regular patient rounds to ensure patient comfort and safety
Applies orthopedic splints as directed by the physician
Assists the RN in rooming patients and department flow activities as directed
Collects and assembles oxygen supplies (does not apply oxygen)
Performs post‑mortem care
Assists with the transport of critical patients to and from the helipad
Distributes drugs (all except controlled substances), needles or syringes from storage locations to patient care areas or treatment carts
Ensures complete and accurate and timely entry of patient information into Meditech
Ensures accurate and timely order entry into Meditech
Complies with HIPPA, PHI, EMTALA and its implications and other regulations which effect the patient care process
Answers high volume of phone calls with professionalism
Provides patient information (limited to location of patient and time of admit or discharge)
Directs visitors to various locations on the hospital campus
Assists with patients and visitors finding their way to ED Treatment Area 2, Diagnostic Imaging, etc.
Follows downtime procedure policy
Requests security when situations arise that require their presence
Recognizes need for assistance and initiates appropriately
Notifies Charge Nurse or other nursing staff of patient's condition needing immediate assessment
Prepares ID band as appropriate
Explains various forms to patients
Instructs patients on proper sign‑in procedures
Assists non‑ambulatory patients
Possesses knowledge of specific protocols involving special cases including 5150, Juvenile Hall clearance, Domestic Violence Coalition, Child Protective Services, Jail Clearance, Assaults, ATC patients
Demonstrates ability to consistently function in an environment that includes varying, unpredictable, or crisis circumstances while exercising appropriate interpersonal and critical thinking skills
Job Requirements
Required
One year recent acute care clinical experience or one year recent EMT experience.
Current BLS healthcare provider (Authorized by the American Heart Association)
Preferred
Emergency Medical Technician: CA, upon hire
