Pediatric Intensive Care Nurse Practitioner Job Description
The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is seeking an energetic acute‑care pediatric nurse practitioner to join our growing team. Nurse practitioners at the main campus 48‑bed PICU collaborate with the medical team and attending physicians to care for high‑acuity, intensive care patients ages birth to 18 years old and their families. Phoenix Children’s Hospital is a level 1 trauma center with robust programs across many specialties. The PICU sees over 2,000 admissions a year and also manages two 8‑bed satellite units where nurse practitioners provide coverage with an attending physician. Practitioners work rotating shifts.
Position Duties
Conduct comprehensive health history, physical assessment and care plans for infants, children and young adults with acute and chronic conditions.
Use advanced assessment skills to manage patient cohorts in collaboration with residents, fellows and attending physicians.
Order and prescribe pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic interventions and perform therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
Develop and implement family‑centered plans of care during interprofessional rounds.
Perform daily documentation and billing.
Collaborate and coordinate care with interdisciplinary services.
Execute critical‑care procedures including intubations, central and arterial line placement, lumbar punctures and chest tubes.
Apply up‑to‑date evidence‑based practice and adjust plans to meet family needs and effectiveness.
Serve as an educational resource for patients, families and the healthcare team.
Participate in professional development opportunities and mentor new team members.
Demonstrate commitment to patient safety and shared accountability for safe practice.
Perform miscellaneous duties such as research and education as requested.
Qualifications
Graduated from an accredited acute‑care pediatric nurse practitioner program.
Preferred: prior PICU experience as a registered nurse.
Accepts new graduate pediatric nurse practitioners.
Ability to work rotating shifts.
