Assistant Controller

SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE
This position will lead and oversee the company's accounting operations in a dynamic biotech environment. This role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, managing core accounting functions, and supporting cross-functional financial initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in accounting, strong leadership capabilities, and a passion for operational excellence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead and manage all aspects of accounting operations including revenue recognition, general ledger, cost of goods sold (COGS), clinical trial accruals, payroll, and accounts payable.

Direct the timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.

Oversee revenue accounting in compliance with ASC 606, gross to net accounting and government pricing calculations and compliance.

Oversee the partnership with supply chain teams to ensure accurate COGS reporting and inventory valuation.

Direct the collaboration with Clinical Operations and FP&A to ensure accurate and timely accruals for clinical studies and R&D activities.

Direct government pricing calculations, related payments and compliance in partnership with Government Pricing and Market Access Operations.

Ensure compliance with GAAP, SOX, and other regulatory requirements.

Manage external audits and coordinate with auditors to ensure timely completion.

Lead and optimize accounting systems and tools to support scalability and automation.

Drive continuous improvement in accounting processes and internal controls.

Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting operations team.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage direct reports covering the areas of revenue, COGS, general ledger/payroll/accounts payable, clinical accruals and accounting systems.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field and 18 years of relevant experience or,

MS/MA degree in related discipline and 16 years of related experience; or

Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Accountant.

EXPERIENCE

7+ years of experience in Big 4 or equivalent work.

Experience with gross-to-net, clinical accruals and inventory accounting preferred.

Experience in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries preferred.

SAP or Tier 1 ERP experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

In-depth knowledge of US GAAP.

Strong interpersonal communication skills, including excellent verbal and written communications.

Advanced analytical thinking to identify root causes and develop innovative and scalable solutions.

Proficiency in evaluating, adopting, and integrating emerging financial technologies.

Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Comfort and experience in a fast-paced environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Our office is a modern, open‑plan space that fosters collaborations and creativity. Teams work closely together, sharing ideas and solutions in a supportive atmosphere. We provide all necessary equipment, including dual monitors and ergonomic chairs, to ensure a comfortable workspace.

This position requires minimal travel time.

COMPENSATION
The base pay range for this position is $241,000 - $342,000 annually, adjusted to the candidate's geographic region. In addition to the base salary, Exelixis offers a comprehensive Total Rewards program including a 401(k) plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, a discretionary annual bonus program, stock purchase options, long‑term incentives, 15 accrued vacation days in the first year, 17 paid holidays (including a company‑wide winter shutdown in December), and up to 10 sick days per calendar year.
