The San Diego County Water Authority is an independent public agency that serves as San Diego County's regional water wholesaler. The mission is to provide a safe and reliable water supply to its 22 member agencies serving the region's $268 billion economy and 3.3 million residents. The Authority is executing a long‑term strategy to diversify the region's supplies, make major investments in the water delivery and storage system, and improve water use efficiency.
Operations & Maintenance Department
The O&M Department is responsible for operating the aqueduct delivery system, ensuring facility security and emergency preparedness, maintaining the fleet and various assets, controlling water deliveries, managing dam and reservoir operations, ensuring water quality, overseeing water treatment plant and power generation operations, keeping all vehicles and heavy equipment functional, providing electro‑mechanical support, implementing the Asset Management Program (AMP), complying with environmental regulations, and managing computerized SCADA and system maintenance programs.
Facilities Maintenance Division
The Facilities/Maintenance division repairs and constructs the aqueduct system, and performs maintenance on aqueduct facilities, buildings, property grounds, and access roads.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate enjoys hands‑on, physically active work and takes pride in keeping facilities, equipment, and outdoor spaces safe, clean, and functional. Maintenance‑related experience in construction trades, landscaping, warehouse, military, or facilities work translates well to this role. Reliable, safety‑mind, and eager to learn will be encouraged and trained.
Experience with hand tools, power tools, or equipment in construction trades—framing, drywall, layout, concrete, asphalt, painting, plumbing, groundskeeping, or similar—it is acceptable. Comfort with outdoor work in all weather, adherence to safety procedures, and teamwork are essential.
The candidate is motivated to build new skills, such as operating loaders, mowers, small excavators, concrete, carpentry, mechanical repairs, roads, buildings, and rights‑of‑way maintenance. Curiosity, strong work ethic, and willingness to ask questions are equally important.
The ideal candidate values teamwork, communicates clearly, follows instructions, and supports after‑hours emergency response. They understand the Authority’s mission and are ready to ensure the region’s water delivery system remains safe and reliable.
Salary Information
Maintenance Worker I: $33.17 – $44.61 / hour ($68,993.60 – $92,786.72 Annual)
Maintenance Worker II: $38.47 – $51.73 / hour ($80,011.36 – $107,604.64 Annual)
The position may be filled at either level, depending on candidate qualifications.
(Facilities Maintenance) Responsibilities
Maintenance Workers perform a wide range of hands‑on tasks, including construction, installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of pipelines, equipment, buildings, and grounds. Using both heavy and light construction equipment, vehicles, and tools, they support the upkeep of pump stations, flow control facilities, reservoirs, rights‑of‑way, access roads, and other critical infrastructure.
Work includes activities such as grading roads, repairing drainage systems, concrete work, carpentry, welding, vegetation management, and maintaining HVAC and plumbing systems.
Perform unskilled and semi‑skilled work in the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of aqueduct pipeline and related equipment and facilities.
Drive vehicles to work sites and set up and remove barricades; direct traffic; load trucks and haul debris.
Install, maintain, and repair fences, gates, culverts, drains, pipes, sprinkler systems, and erosion control; post signs; install and repair window bars and locks.
Shoot, cut, disk, and remove trees, brush, weeds, and rubbish that pose fire or water‑pollution hazards.
Maintain meters and valve stations, shops, restrooms, offices and other facilities in a clean and safe condition.
Work in vaults and confined spaces using proper safety techniques and equipment per Authority policies.
Operate light‑ and medium‑duty motorized vehicles and equipment; check condition, clean, fuel, inspect, and report maintenance needs.
Paint and assist in maintaining, repairing and altering buildings, facilities, and equipment.
Inspect, clean, grade, maintain and repair aqueduct system access and service roads; patch, repair, and resurface asphalt roads and lots.
Licenses and Other Requirements
Valid California driver's license and insurability under the Authority's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
Mandatory physical and drug test for selected applicants.
24‑hour call‑out requirement.
