Job Overview
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hardware Engineering is a fast‑growing, leading‑edge research and development team that creates enterprise compute and storage server designs for our innovative web service and e‑commerce technology platforms. The Firmware Engineer helps build firmware for SSDs and other storage devices to support AWS's cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain firmware for solid‑state drives (SSDs) and other non‑volatile memory devices.
Design firmware architecture to optimize SSD performance across a variety of use cases.
Lead firmware development efforts on custom solid‑state devices.
Collaborate with internal engineers (architecture, hardware, validation, software services) and external partners.
Validate firmware and support device characterization and benchmarking efforts.
Work closely with AWS software engineers to tailor devices for the AWS environment.
Basic Qualifications
5+ years of non‑internship professional software development experience
5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language
5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
Experience in embedded development in C/C++
Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
Bachelor's degree, or Master's degree
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
Deep understanding of SSD hardware architecture and SSD concepts such as wear‑leveling, garbage collection, etc.
10+ years of hands‑on experience developing firmware for SSD and related storage devices
High‑level understanding of storage technologies and associated block interface protocols
