Job Overview
As a
Data Analytics and BI Intern , you will be responsible for a range of data engineering, data analytics, reporting and BI activities for the Mining Analytics team supporting the Strategic Transformation Management Office (STMO), Market Intelligence and cross-functional reporting. The Mining Analytics team develops data solutions for internal stakeholders. Activities will include designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines, analytics, and interactive dashboards/reports that identify trends, patterns, and insights from data to support strategic decision‑making for global Mining.
The summer intern will focus on building up the data and reporting foundation for Market Intelligence for the Strategy & Innovation group to help drive strategic decision‑making for executive leadership for Komatsu Mining.
This position will be based onsite at our South Harbor location in Milwaukee's Harbor District. The target start date for this role is Summer 2026 and has potential to be extended into the Fall 2026 school semester. We offer full‑time hours during the summer, with potential for flexible part‑time hours during the academic year. Temporary relocation support, housing assistance, and/or remote‑based work is not available for this internship position.
Key Job Responsibilities
Help prepare, clean, and transform enterprise data for analytics and reporting use cases
Create and support ETL/ELT workflows using tools such as Python, SQL, Dbt or cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Azure).
Validate data accuracy, completeness, and consistency across multiple sources.
Data Analysis & Reporting
Learn and utilize data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Grafana, Plotly, Streamlit) to present data storytelling techniques to stakeholders
Perform trend analysis, variance analysis, and descriptive analytics to support business questions.
Conduct and assist in exploratory data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and insights from data to support strategic decision‑making
Support ad‑hoc data and analysis requests from different internal business units
Work closely with cross‑functional teams to identify opportunities for process optimization and improvement
Participate in requirements gathering sessions to understand the information needs of different departments
Assist in designing, developing, and maintaining interactive dashboards and reports for internal stakeholders
Support KPI tracking, metric definitions, and performance reporting across multiple business units
Assist in creating automated reporting solutions that reduce manual workload
Help document data models, semantic layers, and BI assets used by internal stakeholders
Market Research
Conduct market intelligence and industry analysis across global mining sectors, including commodities (e.g., copper, iron ore, coal), production trends, and capital expenditure cycles
Analyze macroeconomic indicators (PMIs, interest rates, FX, inflation, energy markets) to assess implications for mining activity and equipment demand
Support preparation of executive‑level reports and presentations (weekly/monthly briefings, strategy updates) summarizing key trends, risks, and opportunities
Translate research findings into clear business implications for OEM strategy, including impacts on equipment demand, aftermarket services, and regional growth opportunities
Assist in building and maintaining data models and dashboards (e.g., production forecasts, capex tracking, commodity price trends) to support decision‑making
Monitor and curate industry news, research reports, and market data sources (e.g., Bloomberg, S&P Global, broker research) to ensure timely insights
Collaborate cross‑functionally with strategy, sales, and product teams to support ad hoc analysis and strategic initiatives
Qualifications/Requirements
Pursuing a bachelor's or advanced degree in Information Systems, Business Analytics, Computer Science, or similar, from an accredited college or university
Junior, senior, or graduate level student in good academic standing
Solid understanding of basic business concepts and the role of data in decision‑making
Proficiency with at least one data visualization tool (e.g., Power BI, Grafana, Plotly, Streamlit)
Familiarity with data manipulation and querying languages (e.g., SQL)
Excellent problem‑solving skills and attention to detail
Effective communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Preferred Qualifications
Previous internship or project experience involving business intelligence or data analysis
A portfolio showcasing business intelligence and data visualization projects
Coursework or projects related to business intelligence, data analysis, or data visualization
Proficient in using SQL for the manipulation of big data
Advanced knowledge of SQL and no‑SQL database concepts and data modeling
Familiarity with cloud‑based database technologies (e.g., Snowflake, InfluxDB, Palantir)
Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, R) is a plus
Familiarity with data modeling concepts (star schema, dimensions and facts)
Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence development (e.g., Snowflake, Streamlit)
Familiarity with predictive modeling
Familiarity with job scheduling tools (e.g., Airflow)
