
Assistant Mechanic

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise and participate in all equipment maintenance to include mower grinding and sharpening, backlapping and setting heights of cut, daily equipment and height of cut inspections, fabrication and welding, engine and transmission work, and vendor and manufacturer correspondence including parts ordering and troubleshooting
Manage all shop operations in the Equipment Manager’s absence
Overhaul and repair maintenance vehicles, mower equipment and other power equipment
Inspect equipment for operating deficiencies and make routine adjustments where necessary
Respond to equipment failures in the field
Maintain knowledge of the theory, care and operation of internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems and mowing equipment maintenance such as grinding, sharpening and adjustment
Receive, unload, and pick up material deliveries at shop and other shipping and receiving areas
Assist in controlling tool access and use by maintenance staff
Monitor and maintain grass dump and wash bay area
Participate in effective equipment orientation and training with staff members; assist in developing ongoing training programs
Maintain appropriate records
Ensure proper calibration of all spraying and fertilizer equipment
Maintain equipment service and storage areas in clean working order
Monitor fuel storage facilities, track staff fuel usage, and ensure proper mixing and handling procedures are followed
Assist the team with wintertime snow removal and plowing as needed
May be relied upon for overtime
Oversee and participate in the maintenance of other department’s vehicles and equipment
Incorporate safe work practices in job performance
Regular and reliable attendance
Maintain a professional standard at Juniper Preserve including but not limited to appearance, interaction with members, associates, and guests of the resort, verbal discussions and written correspondence; do not discuss work-related issues with members and resort guests
Maintain a positive attitude and the flexibility to take on new and different tasks as assigned by the Director of Agronomy and Equipment Manager
Qualifications
Working knowledge of the general operation of gasoline and diesel engines
Knowledge of the proper methods for servicing equipment, sharpening reels and adjustment of all mowing equipment
Ability to use common mechanical tools and understand and follow written and oral instructions
A minimum of three years of experience as a golf course equipment technician or experience in a related field
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, members, and the general public
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise appropriate groundskeepers and foreman with daily job duties
Position may also be called upon to supervise additional staff seasonally
Certificates / Licenses
Valid Driver's License
Mechanics Certificate from Gas and Diesel Engine Training Seminar or equivalent work experience
Working Conditions
Occasionally works in wet or humid conditions (non-weather); with toxic or caustic materials; in extreme cold or heat (non-weather); may experience vibration
Regularly works in outdoor weather conditions and may face the risk of electrical shock or encounter fumes or airborne particles
Frequently works in areas near moving mechanical parts where noise level is loud
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
